Browser Issues

Alright, for the past three weeks, I've been having problems viewing images. For example, when I go to GameSpot.com, about 70% of the images don't show up. This also happens at Deviantart.com as well, except not quite as bad.

This seems to be happening only on a few sites. I've changed all my browser settings back to the defaults. That didn't work. I use MyIE2, NetCaptor, which all use the IE engine. So I'm assuming it has to do with IE.

Another issue is, some banner ads don't show up. Now, that may not seem like a bad thing, but in my case it is. Instead of the banner showing, it says, Page Not Found. Kinda like when you type in a invailed url. When this happens, it floods my back button history with this stupid ad. So when I press the back button, it doesn't take me to the previous page, it just takes me back one step before the stupid banner tried to refresh itself. If that makes any sense to you. And this doesn't happen to all banner ads, just like 80% of them.

I'm starting to think that there was a program on my computer that messed with some ad/poppup blocking things. So now images/banner ads are being screwed up. So if you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

I've already tried scanning using Ad-Aware, I've cleaned the Temp Internet Files/History, I've cleaned the registry, and the HD.

yep, sure does. that's why i kinda figured it had to do with IE itself...

 

Are yo on dial up proffassee?

I often lose image being on slow dialup as the time to live ends before image shows up.

 

Going for the clue about the banners not showing :

1. maybe it is the security settings which have been set too tight. Maybe try to set "Internet"-policy at default level.

2. maybe it is dns problem, check that you are not blocking certain ips with hosts file, maybe try another isp's dns server(if able to find one which is open for outsiders)

Yes, I'm on dialup. But this just started three weeks ago, and before then, never had this problem.

I've already checked both my Security and Privacy settings. I've had these set to low, since the beginning. I've also already checked to make sure to see if any site/ip address were being blocked, and there weren't.

hey snakefoot, I'm running WinXP and so I tried to use that IE6 command line, but it gave me the following error; 'Error Loading setupwbv.dll. The specified module could not be found.' Any ideas?

 

Well it seems that the IE6 repair line only works for Win9x and Win2k. With WinXp the only way to repair is to use run following command :

sfc /scannow

It will validate all Windows System Files, and restore any files which doesn't have the correct version.

 

ok...snakefoot, i just tried that. it didn't work though.

do you think if i were to go into add/remove programs; then into the windows components section,;that if I unchecked IE, restarted, then rechecked it, it would work?

I recall reading that the IE6 cannot be unticked in the Add/Remove Programs but maybe that has changed with SP1.

 

Ok, I tried what the link suggested, and that didn't work either. Now is there anyway I can uninstall IE completely, then reinstall it?

In the mean time, what I may do is uninstall all the other browsers that I have, which are Netcaptor, and MyIE2. See if that does anything. I doubt it will, but you never know...

 

Just for the heck of it, maybe you should run a check for ad-ware which could interfere with your Internet Explorer

 

nope...nothing was found. i usually run ad-aware every other day. i also run a few other programs to clean up the HD and registry. any other ideas? i'm running out of things to try myself...

this seems to be a pretty common problem...I have experienced it and posted on the Windows Newsgroups to no avail...and I've seen it mentioned here before...I've given up on a fix (I know, I may be a bit lazy) and have been using Opera for a while with no similar problems.

 

Ok...I downloaded a copy of Mozilla 1.1. I then went to gamespot .com to see if my image problem was still happening. sure enough it was.

now, i right clicked on the images, and pressed 'view image'. a pop up window came up shortly after that and said, 'The connection was refused when attempting to contact image.com.com.'

so now i'm starting to think it may not be me at all. and if it is a problem on my side, then there is a settings somewhere blocking certain sites/ip addresses...any ideas?

Pop up stopper programs arent going to stop the banner ads from showing

 

snakefoot, I tried resetting TCPIP...that didn't work either. Is there anyway, I can fully uninstall and reinstall it? Because when I went into Network Connections, the right clicked on my ISP connection, and went to where TCPIP was; it wouldn't let me uninstall it. Do you even think that it's worth trying to figure out? Or should I move on to another solution?

 

I don't think it is possible to get rid of the TCPIP protocol in WinXP you can only reinitialize it.

I would start looking at your ISP being the problem. Maybe looking at their support/maintenance page to see if they are working with something in your area.

Another idea to localize the problem is trying to do tracerts / pings to affected sites and compare them with others. If there is high latency/packet loss then you might want to contact your ISP's support.

just ran some tests...

on gamespot.com (which is the site i was losing a lot of the images too), i got a 172ms average. but on majorgeeks.com and hotmail.com i got a request timed out and a 100% data loss.

now i just pinged image.com.com which is kinda silly, cause really, that doesn't seem like a vaild url address. but remember in one of my last posts, i said that when i clicked on the image and said to view it, it told me that the connection was refused. well when i pinged it, it gave me a responce, to my surprise. it said it was replying from 127.0.0.1 which would be me!? that would explain why the image isn't showing up in the first place.

any clues to why it's doin that, or what i could do?

 

Some sites doesn't respond to ping and tracert, this is why you get 100% packetloss eventhough the site is there.

I have tried pinging image.com.com :

Guess it is a DNS-lookup problem like I first suggested(Cannot resolve the IP-Address from the domain-name), try running this command (will open your hosts file in notepad)

NOTEPAD %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS

If it is empty or only containing localhost then it is ok. If it contains several domains besides localhost then you have made changes to the hosts which will affect the DNS-lookup.

If the hosts-file is ok, then I suggest you try another primary and secondary DNS-server. Try to roam around on other ISP sites and find their DNS-servers and use that instead.(Note some ISP will not allow clients from other ISP to use their DNS-Server, so remember to write down you current primary and secondary DNS server before doing this)

Hi, im new to the forum, i had a question, following on from this thread.

But firstly what is with the reverse viewing? last post view first?

Anyhow basically, i cannot access hit counter sites, i originally though that extreme-dm site went offline/closed then tried to access my bravenet counter which wouldnt work and the netstat counter and that wouldnt work. So, ive checked the "notepad %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" file and i see thousands of entries mainly ad/counter sites and those downloadmovies.com, those crap spyware infested sites.

Basically i want access to those counter site, now the problem is the extreme-dm and bravenet entries are all over the file, i want to know how to release, so to speak, the three sites i want to access.

Also ive seen other "notepad %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" files which have far less entries and far less comments like (towards the end of the file there is this....

Ive screwed up the URLs, so they're not clearly readable by a search engine or clickable.

where have these extra bits of info come from? Spybot S&D? Spyware Blaster?Spyware Doctor?Adaware?AVG?PG2?What entered all the sites in the log. There must be over 2000-3000 names of site.

You have a program adding blocked sites to your hosts file, I wouldn't know which one. SpywareBlaster and Spybot S&D add blocked sites to your registry. You could try use a program like Hoster to restore your Hosts file to the orginal Microsoft Hosts file.
