    Hi there.

Firstly, thank you to anyone that replies, I have spent days trying to figure this out, and is probably my first computer related problem I’ve needed help with, (well, I say that, I’ve used majorgeeks in the past to remedy problems with the help of your forums (other people having posed the same question), but I figure, if someone knows the answer, why spend days looking for it, which is very frustrating, when someone already knows the fix.

    Anyway;

I cannot access the internet from my account in XP. It works in safe mode with networking, but not in normal windows. So immediately, I think some kind of service/start-up program/spyware?

    - I have scanned for spyware 3-4 times with malwarebytes and superantispyware, & cleaned the computer many times with CCleaner.
    - Deleted, and changed the host’s files.
    - Reset/renewed the IP settings (netsh)
    - Disabled windows firewall, and reset the settings.
    - Reset internet explorer settings
    - Uninstalled teredo tunnelling pseudo-interface that was showing up in ipconfig/all

I’ve also fixed a missing java.exe and DLL with hijack this, (as java has caused some cataclysmic crashes for me a month or two back), scanned and fixed the registry with AML registry cleaner, All the scans have found errors, and have fixed them, save the java missing exe, and dll it flagged (which is reoccurring, as it’s not going to add an exe from nowhere I don’t think?). However that is now gone too.

Interestingly, I can’t get to my routers page either, and internet explorer gives “page could not be displayed” instantly, without even loading, making me think it’s an internal error, it says “internet explorer could not open the search page” when trying to get to my router.

Now, I thought this was the result of me changing the encoding options on Firefox and internet explorer, (view – encoding), etc, something relatively minor I thought, and have tried many combinations of encoding, but that seems to have no effect. The only reason I thought this might be the cause is because it happened at the same time. I changed these options, this result happened.

Skype/Xfire that run on start-up work, and Mozilla works for 60 seconds or so, but only on direct links, e.g. if you click something on Google, or a button, it won’t work, you have to type in the URL. So of course I’m looking for some help to fix my browsers.. so I can browse!

    Thanks!

I'm no expert but I'll try to help while you wait.

Personally I would not think the encoding has anything to do with it, although I suppose there could be problems (?) if you specify one that isn't installed on your computer...

Just for grins, make a new administrator account, reboot, install firefox to it and see if it works. It might also be worth it to uninstall/reinstall your NIC under the old account.

Under your internet settings, try deleting the DNS IP address and replace it with a garbage address, apply, let it go to "Limited or no connectivity", then replace the correct DNS and apply. This might force a download of new security certificates.

Check scheduled tasks and make sure nothing is scheduled that you don't recognize.

What's IE's homepage set to? When you try to touch your router, are you including "https://" in the address?

Can you ping the router? Can you ping other machines on the LAN by computer name?
