Because of the attention on IE as a hackers doorway, I tried Mozilla and MYIE2. Mozilla is a bit slower than IE, but i like all the plugins with MYIE2 and use it 95% of the time. But, i noticed that any new bookmarks I make with MYIE2 are automatically also created in IE. This being so, just how independent is MYIE2? Is it a viable security alternative?

You might want to spend some time and look up some of the posts that have been done about MYIE2 and see what has already been said. Go to the top of the page here where it says, user cp, register, FAQ....then it says, search. Type in MYIE2 and you'll get over 100 answers. MYIE2 is highlighted on the pages and you can see what applies rather quickly (security, bookmarks, IE, etc).

    Maybe that will help some.

It is an improved version of IE, and subject it many of it's security issues.

I've never seen Mozilla slower than IE.

IE is usually the slowest browser of the bunch.

MyIE2 is a browser overlay to IE. think of it as a skin really with extra functionality. Underneath, it's still IE.

Switched from MyIE2 to Firefox a little over a week ago, FF is faster.

Scanned with Adaware and Spybot last night, clean - not even one tracking cookie.

Don't think I'll be going back to IE.

AND, I installed 0.9.2 over the top of 0.9.1 (a no-no) without a hitch (yet).

    *fingers crossed*

I'm sure they load the same with broadband, but in my 'hood the dial-up is 28.8 and you see the difference.

I hate to disagree here but I get the impression on my system that MYIE2 starts up quicker than FF (0.9.2).

However, since MYIE2 has been renamed to Maxthon and I've tried version 1.0.0.170 this crashes after a while with an infinite message window being displayed forcing a reboot. So I've abandoned MYIE2/Maxthon :( until the next version or so and continue to use FF :).

I did originally observe that FF hung after a some time but nowhere near the problem or time that Maxthon crashed. So far with FF 0.9.2 this hasn't been observed.

In any case an IE browser or clone is needed for some sites especially Windows Update.
    ----------------
What I would like is for FF to auto-disconnect from the Internet upon closing if it is the last application connected. There needs to be some communication between FF and the dial-up connection - starts up OK but doesn't auto-disconnect.

For example if I use Maxthon or IE and then Outlook Express in this order then close Maxthon followed by OE, an auto-disconnect dialog comes up. If FF was started during this sequence and remains at the end then close OE will display the auto-disconnect dialog despite FF being open. Closing FF afterwards does not show the auto-disconnect. :(

I agree with that. However once FF is up and running I think it operates and caches more effeiciently.
There's an extension for FF named ieview that facilitates this rather nicely.
One of the benefits of having IE/OE tightly integrated into the OS.

I would post a question about this at the FF support forum. Maybe there's a workaround someone there can point you to.

There do appear to be some performance improving tricks, e.g., among others:

    http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=97569

Yup, I have this: http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=50 and it opens whatever other browser you wish to view the page.

It is a well known "feature" with FireFox and there are numerous posts about it: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=97360&highlight=disconnect
I suppose we have to be patient to see if there becomes an auto-disconnect extension.
