Initially opened under Malware Forum; had IE8 defaulting to api.mybrowserbar.com . Running Vista. Ran Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, MGTools, TDSSkiller and COmboFix. Now IE displays "cannot be found" for any URL. Loaded Firefox, also not able to connect. Suggested I re-post in the software forum.

    Can you ping an address?
    Open a command prompt.
    Type ping www.google.com
Reply back here with the result you get.

    No, could not find host.
I am connected to a wireless router, have IP via DHCP, subnet, gateway and DNS servers showing...

OK, the problem is either your router or your network configuration (it might have gotten scrambled by the malware removal process).

Go into Control Panel, then Network and Internet (I'm assuming Windows 7), then network and sharing Center, then troubleshoot problems.

This laptop is on Vista. Already tried diagnose and repair, no luck. Also delted and recreated the wireless connection.
I have 2 other computers on the same router working fine (wireless and wired).

First question, can you ping your router? I'm going to guess it is 192.168.0.1. This is the typical setting. But, I really don't know, unless you do the following:

Bring up the "run" box via windows key + R, then type in cmd (press enter)

    type in ipconfig /all > output.txt
    notepad output.txt
    attach output.txt as an attachment.

This way we can see what ye have for IP sake.

On a side note #1221, can you ping: 4.2.2.2 or 50.23.143.68?

If you can, can you open your prefered browser, and in the url box, use http://50.23.143.68

    ipconfig /all attached.
I get replies from 4.2.2.2 but 50.23.143.68 returns reply destination host unreachable.

    Can you ping 192.168.1.1?
Can you ping 68.87.76.182 or 68.87.78.134?

    What about 208.67.220.220?

Another thing to test, is to connect your computer directly to the modem that comcast gave you. This way, we can bypass your router to see if THAT is the issue.

Yes, I know that other computers are fine on the network. Just want to look at this computer.

    Another IP to ping: 74.125.225.17

  11. zakrz1

They all come back Reply from <ip>: Destination host unreachable.

So, you can't ping 192.168.1.1? But, you can ping 4.2.2.2?

"Reply from 192.168.1.1: Destination host unreachable."

At the dos window, try to do a:

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

Then ping 192.168.1.1 (this should be your router)

  15. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Just to confirm, this, on a working computer using whatever browser ye have, go to the url: http://192.168.1.1

This should bring up your router config login.

I know there are some lurkers here, feel free to jump in (abeki/satrow). :)

Just curious, is this the only wireless computer that ye have? Or are the others also wireless?

Some sudo advanced things to try, is to uninstall your wireless software/drivers and reinstall them. Then reconnect it.

  17. zakrz1

    zakrz1 Private First Class

release/renew no change. I can get into the router from another machine.

  18. zakrz1

I have 2 other machines working on the router fine (wired and wireless). I allow up to 6 devices but there are only 3.

Okay, you posted in the malware forum first, did they clear you of any malware?

Yet another thing to try. heh.

On a computer that is wireless. Check the ip on that computer. Copy that down.

Now, this will be difficult on my side of things, since I don't have wireless. Perhaps one of the lurkers will have a suggestion, essentially, I would like to see if you were to change your IP to the IP of a computer that IS working.

So, it is getting late, but, I'll try:

Go into networking, then change advanced adapter settings.
Right click your wireless network card, click properties (kinda wonder if it states, connected).
Click, Internet Protocol version 4, then click properties.

Click "use the following IP address: Type in the IP of the computer that is working (but should be turned off). Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet, and 192.168.1.1 for the gateway. Click OK..

Now, check to see if you ping 50.23.143.68

    theefool Geekified

This is just the basics. You may not need to do this, but there are other things to try that are a we bit more advanced.

At the command prompt, and I should say, do this before the above changing the ip, try:

    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

    reboot the computer.

    Cross fingers, and hope. :)

I downloaded and reinstalled the NIC drivers.
    Tried a static ip (.105) didn't help.
Went back to DHCP, ran netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt , rebooted and browser still not working, can't ping 50.23.143.68 .
On the malware question, apparently nothing else was found in the last logs and that's why I was sent here...

Urgh, I know I can fix this, but, sadly, I have to head to bed. Hopefully, someone can post a most awesome thing to correct your issues. Good luck!

I don't run Vista so I'm zero help in finding correct paths to anything. My computers run Windows 2000, Windows XP and Linux.

My "network" at home consists of 7 computers. Two never go on the internet. Of the remaining 5: 2 were wired and 3 were wireless. When one or more computers lose access (and even the printer from time to time), the best way for me to get back the internet connection is to disconnect the power from the router (computers can be on or off), wait at least one minute then reconnect the router. This forces the router to forget what it had and start reassigning new IPs to the computers and the print server. This has always worked.

Turned the router off for several minutes, back up, renewed IP on the laptop in question, no difference...

Since it is a laptop, can you plug the network cable that goes into the router, into the laptop? This way, we can narrow the issue. Is it the laptop, or is it something else. Love to take out the router issue. If it still won't work, there are other things to try.

Interesting... Works fine over ethernet! Went back to wifi, not working properly.

Interesting indeed. So, we have confirmed it is the router...............

Okay, now, I do know a few things, but we do need to know the make and model of your router. :)

  29. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Another thing to look at, is to delete your connection to said router, and reconnect it. Not sure if this was said in the past or not.

Also, you using windows wireless, or are ye using something that came with the laptop's oem's software to connect?

I don't think it's the router because another laptop is working on it wirelessly just fine. It a Cisco/Linksys E3000.
There are 2 programs called HP Wireless Home Setup and HP Network Assistant, neither of which load....
I'm thinking something in the registry got hosed when we cleaned the original problem of IE defaulting to api.mybrowserbar.com .

Yeah, that is my guess too. Since, I'm not on a laptop, I can't really help with the wireless issue. My guess would be to uninstall the HP wireless/assistant junk and use window's built in wireless to attempt to connect to the outside world.

Also, you may want to check your OEM's site to see if there is any updates to your wireless adapter.

Deleted the HP wireless assistant, still no go.
Did notice something strange: cursor over the wireless icon displays "Access: Local only" . Never came across that before...?

OK I found it! Apparently there were a lot of problems with HP/Compaq's drivers for the Atheros wireless adapters and Vista. Downloaded the latest straight from Atheros and immediately can access the Internet.
Thanks to all who worked in this with me!
