BSOD after installing IE8 update

So a friend of mine did an update on his machine which installed IE8. It blue screened almost immediately so he says. He said he was finally able to do a system restore, and everything was fine. He said he did the updates again not realizing that was the issue, now he does not have any restore points. He is running Windows Vista home premium. I haven't had a chance to look at it and probably won't for a couple days. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to approach this. I was thinking about just booting into safe mode using my thumbdrive to retrieve his photos (thats what he is most concerned with then just re-installing his OS. Any thoughts on that??

Will it still boot up even in safe mode?
Try uninstalling IE8 and that will roll it back to IE7.

Hi Rez,

System Restore seems to be the best option for this not so uncommon problem, see Rob Pegoraro's column in the Washington Post but now that he has no restore points <shrug>

Don't be surprised if you can't get it into safe Mode either, can you take your PC with you in case you have to pull his drive to copy his photo's off?

Or perhaps a bootable Linux Distro or PE to boot it from then copy his data to USB?

See if your friend can get into Safe Mode first.

This is for the OS he is running, Vista.

For Windows Vista
To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps:
1. Carefully select and then copy the following command:
FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-8*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /upfname /norestart"
2. Click Start, and then type Cmd.exe in the Start Search box.
3. In the list of programs, right-click Cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator.
Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
4. Right-click inside the Administrator: Command Prompt window, and then click Paste to paste the command that you copied in step 1.
5. Press ENTER to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
6. When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.
