BSOD After Installing Norton

Greetings. I am working on a friend's computer that now only gives a BSOD on start up (0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA). This is a Dell XP SP2 machine (Intel P4).

My friend had was trying to uninstall his McAfee and install Norton instead. He had successfully uninstalled McAfee (although I suspect not really since it is so notoriously hard to remove) and had just installed Norton when he began receiving these BSODs.

At this point I cannot boot normally, but only in Safe Mode. Does anyone have any ideas how I can proceed to fix this?

When I try to run that from safe mode I receive the window that asks what type of program I want to use to open that file. I also cannot run anything from the Run window either like msconfig, ipconfig, cmd, etc.

Now I've gotten around this by booting in Safe Mode with Command Prompt...which lets me get into the MCPR.exe file. However, THAT file tries to run another .exe which then gives me the same window which asks me what type of program I want to use to open the file.

How can I run these .exes?

First, thanks for the previous tips...especially the link to correct the .exe file extensions. That was snappy...and a great reference!

Now I've managed to run the McAfee removal tool, however I get a permissions error on every single module it tries to uninstall. I am logged in as Admin as well. It goes through the whole thing anyway and gives me a log file which I've attached (I had to zip the txt file since it was too big to upload). It asks me to reboot, but I still get the BSOD on normal startup. I really think the permissions errors are not allowing the uninstall to be complete. How can I get around this?

    Many thanks!

You need to stop it from restarting on BSOD's so we can find out what the error is. Are you getting permission errors on programs?

I'm not getting permission errors on programs...only when I try to uninstall McAfee.

It's not restarting on BSODs...this is the specific error I am getting:

    0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

And it is set to minidump to here: %SystemRoot%\Minidump but the folder doesn't exist, which I find odd.

I had that same problem with the minidump folder. I ended up playing around with the settings for where the minidump file goes (i didn't mess with the location, I think I just changed it to kernel dump or smt.. either way i just played around with it.. then the next time it blue screened i found the minidump file.

I don't know if that will work for you.. but worth a try.

Well, after perusing some MSDN articles I decided to do a chkdsk /f /r. Now I'm not sure why I didn't think of this before, but I didn't. Anyway, after I run it...Windows booted normally. So I ran the McAfee Uninstall from the normal boot mode and it actually ran and finished. It said it needed to reboot to finish the uninstall, but on reboot I got the same stop error. So I've done some experimenting and I can boot normally IF and only IF I run a chkdsk first. Intriguing.

As I've been doing some other poking around on this machine I'm pretty sure it has some malware on it, so I'm going through the steps in the READ ME in the Malware Forum in hopes that this alleviates some issues. I'll post my results later in that forum.

Thanks for everyone's help in here!
