    Hi all,

I just installed Service Pack 3 on my Dell Win XP Media Edition laptop. When it was complete, it told me to restart so I did... and got the BSOD.

I restarted and tried going into Safe Mode (have tried all 3 versions of Safe Mode), and I still get the BSOD. Windows never opens.

I changed the booting sequence & tried booting from my Win XP SP1 reinstallation CD from Dell, but I still get the BSOD.

I ran CHKDSK & FIXBOOT (not that I really have a clue what those do lol) & STILL am getting the blue screen. Ug! Is there a way to do a system restore from DOS?

My laptop has tons of memory and was working just fine before I installed SP3. The only slightly unusual thing about my computer is perhaps that I still use IE 6... never upgraded to IE 7, but I can't imagine that would make a difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Oops, yeah that would help!

    The blue screen says: Stop: 0X0000007E (0XC000001D, 0XF78DE8E2, 0XF78DE7EC, 0XF78DE4E8)

    Check out this site:

May help with your stop codes.

But it looks like your going to have to do a repair with your Win XP SP1 installation CD from Dell.

I had a similar issue after installing SP3 for XP. I was able to do a repair with my original OS disc and got everything back to SP2.

    Hi Miykle & Mickey...

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I was too impatient to try & troubleshoot the specific stop codes so I used the link Miykle provided, and it eventually led me here:

I chose to just completely remove SP3 and now my computer is fine.

    Thanks again!

I have the exact same error and have an intel machine. XP3 works perfect in my wifes AMD machine.

I have Intel, too. Did you try the suggestions from Miykle & Mickey?

I have backups with Acronis so I can revert back to my backup at anytime. My XP sp2 works perfect, however even before sp3 if I did the latest updates my computer started getting bsod. There is some update that doesn't agree with my system. SP3 obviously has that same update included. I revert back to sp2 and everything is great.

Well I am pretty sure that sp3 is just another load of (blank) that Microsoft is shoveling our way. I have had 2 systems so far go BSOD after installation. The worst part about it is that even all three flavors of safe mode also BSOD. Not a big deal to me since I have gotten used to Microsoft's shoty business practices and have take preclusions to back my systems up with GHOST. I am going to try my other two systems that are Nvidia / intel based. The two I did first are AMD/ATI based system. Gotta love Microsoft! without them there would be no need for IT.
