Bsod and instability after increasing memory

Hello all and apologies for a fairly long post, but I am at my wits end here but hopefully you will find my case interesting:)

I have a Clevo D900C that has been perfectly stable for about two years now.

However in this period it has only been running one gig of ram since whenever I try to upgrade I get strange behavior ranging from Bsod and various other strange behaviours. I have tried this with two different 2 gig sticks, 1 kingston, and 1 pql that was delivered with the machine but then mixed with a 1 gb transcend stick which is the only one that has been stable. Infact in order to get the machine installed properly when I first got it I hade to remove the 2gig stick and run it only with 1gig.

    Specs(with 2 gigs):
    Intel Q6600
    Socket 775 LGA
    Chipset P965/G965
    Nvidia Quadro FX 1600M
    2 gig Pql memory.
    Also attached report from cpu-z

All sticks checked with memtest86 and come out as clear, also both slots and combinations of sticks.

    The symptoms:
Only Kingston 2g stick: BSOD usually within 10 minutes of booting the computer.
    Last causes listed in windebug:

    Pool_corruption
    ntkrpamp.exe
    win32k.sys

    Only pql 2g stick:
No bsod but various strange problems with using the computer:
The downloaded imap4 headers in thunderbird gets deleted and need to be downloaded.
Not able to run firefox, after a while it works again.
    problems unzipping files, unzipping fails
problems extracting files to install graphics driver, after about 10 tries it succeeds.
Problems installing/updating graphics driver failing when installing the nvidia control application.
Solved by putting the 1 gig stick back and extracting the files to a different directory, I can then install normally. When extracting to the same direcotry as used with the two gig stick the install fails.

After putting the 2 gig pql back in I once again get 7-zip Crc error when extracting the files in the nvidia installer.

I am sure there are tons more problems I have yet to find out about.

So the question then: Does anyone have any tips as to how I can install more memory into this machine and have it work as expected?

Thank you very much for any and all help!

    Thor

    Hi

Your CPU temps seem a little high, not excessive but at 60c and if thats idle its a tad high and could be a cause of the random BSODs (would need the bsod messages in full as well to advise), whats your cooling like, is the room ambient temp quite warm?

Is the case and fans clean and free from dust?
What directions are the case fans going in as if they are setup wrongly they can cause dead air spaces that warm up?

ntkrpamp.exe is a memory error, but could also be down to applications installed and antivirus and a CD Mounting app like MagicISO etc could cause this, so what applications start with your PC and mention all the security softare installed?

Have you booted to Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and is it the same.

Are all your drivers upto date, and no yellow ! marks in device manager?

Outside chance is its a hardware error on the motheboards memory controller if the main cause each time is the various makes of ram sticks plugged in, what are the type of ram sticks you have the make you have mentioned but what spec are they eg. Corsair Dominator CM3X2G1600C8D 2 GB DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM

or the Hard Drive has bad sectors, so run http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Hello and thank you for your repply!

Yes I am not suprised its a little high as this is a laptop with a desktop processor in it. Anyway there are three fans one sits right on top of the processor, one on top of the memory and one I assume sits on top of another unit which I have not looked inside. The fans are cleaned and seem responsive to changes in load(increase their rpms), the temperature here is quite low(norwegian winter:). Can the fan control be adjusted somewhere?
With the one gig I have to say I have used this computer in very varied environments some quite hot and put it through more computing hell than I thought possible with just 1 gig without issues..

I have not made any other changes to the system than increasing the memory and until doing so it has been fairly rock solid with the one gig stick. All drivers are updated all clear in the device manager. I have updated the graphics driver as mentioned.

The memory I am currently using and that was delivered with the machine is:
    Manufacturer : PQI CORP.
    Part Number : Unspecified
    Serial Number : Unspecified
    Type : DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400 (399 MHz) - [DDR2-800]
    Format : SO-DIMM (67,6 x 3)
Antivir personal antivirus software, was also installed when just running the 1g stick.

However when running the crucial memory scan (http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/index.aspx) the recomendation it comes up with is to run ddr2 pc2-5300 memory. Could this have something to do with it?

Should I put the kingston back in and see if it bsod in safe mode as well?

With the pql stick the system stays up, but applications are crashing frequently.
If I have more bsods I will be sure to make a note of what the blue screen says too.

    Thank you for your help!

Correction, all drivers are cleared, but have only updated the graphics driver, and installed driver for Rme fireface soundcard, the rest are as was delivered with the computer.

    Hi

Yes I'm not to suprised too at the temps now myself from what you have in that laptop, as for fan control, yes check your BIOS as some have various settings for say quiet PC and max termal control, likely in the hardware menu of the BIOS, but just go through each menu as they are all different. Or try Speedfan allows fan speed changes on many motherboards.

If the ram that was in the PC from delivery and it works fine then suspect the other two and what are their types? but as you also mention with this pql stick in applicatons crash, which could be hardware failure or temp.

Yes do try the Kingston and in safe mode, could just link to a driver or software, and please the BSOD code is very useful and also attach in a text file the windebug log when you bsod again,

    Hi again.

Ok so the latest news is as follows.

The kingston now fails the memtest86 so I have taken that out of the race, I might have thought I was testing that one when I infact testing the PQI.

The 1gb transcend ran several passes with no error with memtest86, as did the 2gb PQI stick. However when running memtest86 with both sticks installed and only then there are some errors at around 1413 mb which must mean that the error occurs in the 2gb stick?

Can I then conclude that the 2 gb PQI stick is also broken?
Are there some more tests that I can/should run?

Software issues with the 2 gb PQI:
    Open office no longer runs.
    Google chrome no longer runs
    Firefox crashes.
    Downloads are corrupted.
    Software installs fail.
However I did edit video for several hours with no problems using Sony Vegas.

Thank you very much for your help so far. I guess sometimes one just has to take time out to find out about these things.

    Thor
