    Greetings All!

Long Time Reader, First Time Posting. I am a seasoned (22 year) IT Ops Specialist and I am encountering a very weird scenario that I have been diagnosing in stages for almost a year now and wanted to throw it into a discussion and see what comes of it.

    Computer is:
    Dell OptiPlex 320
    Intel Core2 4300 @ 1.8 GHz
    1GB RAM
    Windows XP Professional SP3
PC is approximately two years old

Every two weeks or so there is a BSOD that always when debugged, blames the NTOSKRNL.sys or WIN32K.sys. Now I know that normally these two core system files do not usually "cause" the problem per say so much as are blamed by some other factor. Some of the troubleshooting that has gone on with the machine in stages:

    • Updated System BIOS
    • Updated all hardware devices
    • Completely free of virus/trojans/spyware/malware/etc
    • Cleaned with CCleaner (Files/Registry/etc)
    • Completely defragmented several times (Defraggler)
    • Ran Chkdsk as is, with /F switch & with /R switch
    • Ran System File Checker
    • Completed 10 successful passes with Memtest on RAM
    • Completely dismantled case and cleaned with air compressor
    • All connections tight

Interesting with the Chkdsk - the initial run with the /R switch (suggested after running the as is "chkdsk") is that it found:

Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive.
Cleaning up 3791 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 3791 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 3791 unused security descriptors.

Then on the next pass with the /R switch:

Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive.
Cleaning up 4 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 4 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 4 unused security descriptors.

The most recent BSOD reported a Pool_Corruption and debugging it said that is was most likely caused by NTOSKRNL.sys which led to the three Chkdsk runs today. I thought that even if I found out the hard drive was on it's way out then at least that would be an answer.

I am attaching the log files for the three chkdsk runs today plus the minidump file from today. All previous minidump files have since been tossed to keep the drive clean and clear. Any thoughts would be appreciated as to what other direction I could go looking for answers. If anything else is required (scans, logs, etc) keep in mind I managed 250+ users and will gather the info as soon as possible that is requested.

    Thank You,
    Joel

seeing that chkdsk has reported some errors, its possible that the hard drive is malfunctioning. Have you tried any SMART tests? preferably the long test. Try running diagnostic software from the drive's manufacturer.

on a side note, i'm involved in another thread where similar things are happening, and it might be a motherboard or cpu issue

    Thanks Smoking Gun,

I have run the S.M.A.R.T. tests by the manufacturer (which would not output the results) and so I am running the trial version of ActiveSMART and I am attaching the report from that.

The S.M.A.R.T. test and the Extended Test using the Western Digital software claim the drive is healthy but even though I do not fully understand the numbers given by the report, I can clearly see a problem with the "threshold" and "worst" values.

Again, I am attaching the S.M.A.R.T. data report and appreciate any direction from there. Thanks,

    Joel
