BSOD - Unmountable Boot Volume

I hope I can get some help here. I am at my wit's end, but will not give up yet! I got the BSOD on my Toshiba Satellite A70 laptop "Unmountable Boot Volume" (seems to be popular). I tried the recovery cd and it boots but when I try to recover it tells me an anti virus software is running? I then tried the Windows XP Home Edition and selected R and did the chkdsk /r and then fixboot, fixmbr etc. etc. It says I have unrepairable boot sectors. Most sites say it's my HD but I think anything can be fixed. I tried a format c: in dos but it did not wipe it clean. I tried to delete the partition but it won't let me. My co-worker suggested this site and told me to look for a program that will completely wipe clean the hard drive and start fresh. Any help is appreciated. I just can't afford to purchase a new laptop or HDD.

 

By the looks of it, it is your HDD.

 

Thanks but I am going to try DBAN's Boot and Nuke as a final alternative and if not then I guess I have a new paper weight.

 

How old is the hard drive?

 

It's about 5 years and was working great until one day last week and it froze and I couldn't shut it down, so I unplugged it and the battery. Could that of been the cause? I only use it to muck around on, not worried about any data etc.

 

For wiping the HDD many recommend Darik's Boot and Nuke 2007-04-29 Beta .

Most laptop HDDs are cheap and easy to replace, normally 1 screw and slide it out.
