    Getting a BSOD X'0000007E' with no file name specified when I try to boot in normal mode, but it boots OK to safe mode w/networking (posting from there).

    Read the tutorial on minidumps & downloaded the installer for Windbg, but it won't install, with the message: "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation".

    How can I get the debugger installed to see what is causing this BSOD?

    TIA for any help you can provide.

    P.S. -- I'm also waiting for a response over on the malware forum after running all the scans, I just rebooted to verify things are OK and now I'm getting this BSOD. If I can identify the cause of the BSOD it may help me there too.

    Write this to floppy/cd/dvd & boot it up for 5-8 passes:

    <snip>

    Any errors can mean either wrong memory settings in bios or faulty memory. In which case, post your specs.

    Thanks for the memtest url, that booted fine and found no errors after 7 passes, so I stopped it.

    It turns out that the BSOD was caused by a failed sound card. I removed that card and now I can boot to normal mode.

    Thanks for the help. I'm going back over to the Malware forum now to finish fixing those issues.

    Don't assume the sound card is bad, sometimes the connection terminals in the slot or on the card itself, or between them when its installed get a little oxidized and cause a failed connection at some point. Sometimes, just plugging the device in and out a few times is enough to clean the contacts (with the power off of course). Also it could be possible that your drivers became corrupt so uninstalling the drivers, using a driver cleaner to be sure and cleaning the registry afterword could allow you to reinstall the card working like before.

    That's good advice, thank you. After I finish dealing with my malware infection I will do exactly that.

    I have not heard of a "driver cleaner" before. Are there sticky messages or tutorials I should read first?

    Thanks for the help.

    Well, I thought I'd post back again about the sound card. I reinstalled it (reseating several times to make sure of a good connection), and then re-installing the drivers that came with the machine, but it was no good -- none of the Creative software could detect that there was a sound card there at all, and Creative Mediasource consistently crashed to a BSOD 0X8E in driver ctoss2K.sys.

    I have purchased a new sound card and will install that in place of the old one.

    Thanks again for your help. I may have some other non-BSOD questions later.

    Bye for now.

    I'm getting the same message and can't install the debugger in safe mode. They key HKLM/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Windows/Installer/DisableMSI doesn't exist. How else would the install of an MSI be prevented?
