Here are the highlights of my attempts
    1) I tried running diagnotics provided on dell system - Symptom tree on the harddrive (IDE Disk S/N= MRH403M4GGNXHB - Read Test) ,i encountered 3 errors similar to this
    Error Code 0F00:0244
Msg: 111153325 Uncorrectable Data Error or Media is write protected.
    2) Ran the "chkdsk /r" option. The result showed 1 error found and fixed. But the original error continued with the blue screen on reboot.

Any help to troubleshoot is very much appreciated. Regards,

    Hi dlb

    Thanks for the prompt response.
I tried to reboot my laptop, the blue screen appears with the error given in previous thread. The laptop doesn't go beyond this point. How can I run the diagnostic ?
Can you please explain with detail steps?

    Thanks.

Most hard drive diagnostics are bootable. Since you obviously have access to a functional PC, go to the hard drive maker's web site and download their diagnostic tool. All the hard drive companies have 'em as free downloads, except Toshiba hard drives. If you have a Toshiba hard drive, you can run the Hitachi/IBM diagnostic. If you don't know which company made the hard drive in the laptop (Dell doesn't make their own hard drives), then power up the laptop and check the system BIOS by pressing F2 at the Dell logo screen. Usually the BIOS will list the model number of the hard drive. If it starts with ST it's a Seagate; HT or IC or HGS is Hitachi/IBM; MK is Toshiba; WD is Western Digital. If none of these appear at the start of the model number, just go to Google and search for it, or post it here. If the BIOS doesn't list the model number of the hard drive, you'll have to open the laptop hard drive compartment, remove the drive and look at the label. If you're not comfortable with opening the hard drive compartment (it's really easy; all you need is a small screwdriver to remove 2 screws) you can run a bootable info tool. There's several on the UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) and this CD also has all the diagnostic tools from the various drive makers, so you don't need to go to the company's web site unless you want the newest tool available which usually isn't necessary. The UBCD is a free download and is available right here at Major Geeks. When you run the download, you end up with an .ISO file that you must burn to a CD as an image file. If you burn it as a regular data CD, it will not boot. If you need help with burning an .ISO image, just let us know....
    Good luck!

    Hi dlb,

I created the ultimate boot cd and was able to boot the pc using the cd. I ran chk disk. It showed 4 KB in bad sector. It did not fix anything.

What do I need to do next?

I tried to reboot the system without the CD ., but again the blue screen appears giving win32k.sys error.

Thanks a lot for your help.

You need to find out the manufacturer of your hard drive. Then boot to the Ultimate Boot CD and select the appropriate diagnostic. chkdsk is completely different from a drive diagnostic. So, run a full extended diagnostic using the correct program from the UBCD. If the drive passes the test, then review the Microsoft links I posted in reply #2 above. If none of the info in those links helps, then we'll move to step 4 (? step 5? step 6?)

(sorry I didn't get back to you sooner; 12+ hours a day, 6 days a week at work keeps me pretty busy; plus I try to have a life too ;) )

    Hi dlb,

Thanks for taking time from your busy schedule to respond to my post. Appreciate it.

I ran the hard drive diagnostic for Hitachi (thts my hard drive). I get the message 'Operation completed Successfully... Disposition code =0x00).

I read the info in the website from your previous thread. I did not help.

The blue screen still appears after I reboot my laptp. The message codes are slighltly different than the original.

can you think of anything that you might have changed recently, before this happened? any new drivers, new hardware, etc? or is this the result of installing a service pack? (2 or 3)

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893239/en-us

can you eject the cdrom and try to boot?
