I have here a friend's laptop and every time i try to boot it normally i get a BSOD, i could not catch the error message but it did make a memory dump, after the memory dump it restarts itself.
I managed to start the laptop in Safe Mode with networking, but got a BSOD again this time saying:

    "PAGEFAULT_IN_NONPACED_AREA"

It rebooted and i tried Safe Mode again and it worked. I am now in the laptop with safe mode on and am wondering if theres anything you guys can do to help?

I don't know where to begin, but if there's any memory dumps or anything else you need just ask.
I don't know where to obtain the memory dumps also.

Its probably a stick of RAM going bad.

If the laptop has 2 sticks of RAM in it, and you feel comfortable enough, you can take one out and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't swap it out with the one that's in there. If that doesn't fix it I would run a memtest just to be safe.

If it comes back that the RAM is good the Hard Drive might be going.

Hm.. I ran the memtest through the recovery CD, and it found no errors. I then proceeded to system restore it to a previous point, which was mid last year...
Now it hangs when i boot it up normally

Sorry for the double post guys, i'm not trying to bump or anything, I just couldn't find how to edit my previous post. Merely do i want to post more information.

My friend said he had no anti-virus protection when this happened.
I'm pretty sure it's a virus that's trying to emulate a corrupted hard drive, when it is not (ran chkdsk \f through recovery disk cmd, no errors, could not export log although)

I have a few error messages from BSODs and i disabled automatic restart when windows crashes so i could present them here:

    There is a DRIVER_IQRL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD
    and
Something got to do with iastor.sys

Whenever i try to system restore, it says:
An unspecified error occurred during system restore 0x8000ffff
However, when i booted it into safe mode it said it successfully restored to the point i specified.

I then checked some solutions on the internet, and one gave a lot of lines for command prompt.
I did these and encountered an error with one line, forgot to write that one down.
    The commands were as follows:
    bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    c:
    bootrec /RebuildBcd
    bootrec /FixMbr
    bootrec /FixBoot
    cd boot
    attrib bcd -s -h -r
    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    bootrec /RebuildBcd
    bootrec /FixMbr

At "bootrec /FixBoot", the error appeared, something got to do with an unspecified hard disk drive, which is clearly not true seeing as the command "dir c:" showed that the C: did exist.

I continued along anyway, even with the error, and now boot up is impossible, not even safe mode with a BSOD error of
    STOP: 0x0000007B

So now i am system restoring to see if it will fix this issue.

When i can get into safe mode, it is for random amounts of time, it will randomly BSOD at any given time, with one of the error messages given at the start of my post.

    Anything you guys can suggest?

Grab his files, put them on an external (disk or drive) and do a clean install. With no protection, you may spend an inordinate amount of time trying to clean it up and still not get a hidden rootkit.

Ah, I just saw you can no longer even boot into safe mode. I do not recommend attaching a possibly infected drive to your healthy computer to grab his files. The price he has to pay for no security might be the loss of his files. Sad, it is a costly lesson.

you could slave the drive into another copmuter and just scan it. As long as you don't open the drive, then your pc should be ok. However, his HD is probably infected beyond repair just like PLODR mentioned.

Thanks for the help guys, but i ran lots of commands through cmd, following some stuff on the web, and now there are no BSODs and i ran scans etc. and got rid of the infections it had.
    The Laptop now runs 100%.
