Ok so i've been getting a couple different BSOD's..... I've been having a problem with my computer randomly restarting for some time now and have had a few threads on here that never seemed to fix the problem. But while reading other threads I found out about disabling to restarting so I could actually see the BSODs, so here are the ones I have gotten.

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    stop: 0x0000000A (0x00941030, 0x0000001C, 0x00000000, 0x804FAFFF)

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    stop: 0x0000000A (0x00BBAC6C, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x0804FED1C)

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    stop: 0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xB9A3AEC5)
    ALCXWDM.SYS address B9A3AEC5 base at B9A30000

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    stop: 0x000000BE (0xB382D000, 0x7437B900, 0xB46DB9BO, 0x0000000E)
    nv4_disp.dll address BFCDCCEC

So ya, I've been getting a variety.... The last one looks like an NVIDIA file and the second to last one is a Realtek AC file......

I have windows xp pro SP2
    AMD 64 X2 4600 MSI NX7900GTX 512MB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103751)
    Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4 Motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128321)
    MSI 7900GTX 512MB video card
    2x1GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 ram (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145034)

So ya.... all help is greatly appreciated (also due to a thunderstorm on tuesday i wont have internet at home until Wednesday july 11 so i'll just be checking this at work and going home and testing stuff so sorry for slow responses before that date)

Anything else you need to know just let me know!!!

    Thank you!

Since Windows is bitching at all sorts of different drivers/hardware look for a commin factor.

    (1) The easiest is the hard drive need checking - run checkdisk or better download the manufacturers check utility from MG.

    (2) Depending upon the age of your pc you may have one with faulty motherboard components (capacitors). Especially if they are subject to extra electrical stress from thunderstorms.

    Look at

Ya its not even a year old, built it last August so other than tuesday there hasn't been anything of the sort..... so i really doubt that thats it but when i'll get home i'll open it up and take a peak..... was planning on doing some more cord management soon anyways.....

ok ill run checkdisk but whats that other utility you're talking about? Where is it?

    Make up your mind.

Interestingly another reported cause of miscellaneous sudden reboots is a problem with the screensaver. Try changing it.

i meant no other problems as in no other times when anything has been hit by lightening..... but the restarts have been happening for a long time....

what tests should i do? (they are both seagate, yay.... only one download)

ya i downloaded it but which tests should i do?

    Short Drive Self Test

    Short Generic
    Long Generic

A geek would try them all to see what they do.

  13. JJJIrish05

    JJJIrish05 Sergeant

ok i tried all of them on the main, and smaller HD and they all passed.... did both the short ones on the larger HD that passed, but it said the long ones would take like 4-5 hours on it since its 500GB.... but i put that HD in after i was getting the errors anyways so i dont think i'll bother......

    so what next? :major :hammer

Tracking down oddball faults is never easy and can be a long process. Sometimes you can strike lucky early on. It helps to understand what is going on and what the causes might be. Unfortunately possible causes are legion and may occur in software or hardware.

If it is a straightforward fault in the hardware or overheating, the system would simply turn off and stay off. It would not restart.
So either the system is issuing false restart commands or suffering temporary loss of data.

False restart commands can occur with faulty grounding of the mains supply in the building.
It can also occur with faulty motherboard components or BIOS chip. It cannot come from the pc’s own internal power supply (but see later).

Or the system can be suffering temporary loss of data. So the operating system vanishes and the BIOS restarts the pc in the normal manner.
This can be caused by faulty data cables, the routing of the data cables or simply too sharp a bend in the cable. This is particularly true of SATA cables near the connectors.

A simple thing to do is to run the pc from another operating system, such as a bootable floppy or CD. Note not one which starts the local Windows.
If the problem persists whilst running in this fashion it is not a fault with Windows or the hard drive. Conversely if there is no fault like this then you can home in on Windows/hard drive.

Does the fault occur if Windows is run in safe mode or at the command prompt or at the logon screen?
If not then use MSCONFIG to hunt down the offending driver/program by selective disabling/enabling.

See the thing it its totally random..... i had it on for like 4 or 5 hours yesterday with no problems at all..... so even if i did run it in safe mode and it didn't restart i wouldn't really know if there is a reason behind it or if i just got lucky for a while....... and i dont think its my house cause i've gone to plenty of lan partys and its happened there too..... As for another operating system I suppose I could do that.... what would you recommend? Ive used other operating systems like at school and stuff but i've never had dual operating systems or run on off a CD...... So some kind of instruction would be greatly appreciated.....

thanks so far for your suggestions

A windows 95/98 or DOS boot disk will do and run it overnight if you need to wait a few hours for the error to repeat or not. Boot from the floppy to the A> prompt then remove the floppy and go to bed. If it reboots overnight you will see an error message, if not then the A> will still be there till next Christmas.

I shall follow N. Mitford and invent 'Geek and non Geek'

So use your Windows CD and boot to setup. Or get a bootdisk download from MG or Bootdisk.com On a modern motherboard you should have a setting to boot from USB or other removable media.

You will have to put some effort in here.

This is an important test as it allows you to see whether the fault lies in Windows and its hard drive or the rest of the system.

What happened to the data cabling inspection?

The only other thing to check is to make sure there is no conflict between the power management settings in Windows and the bios.

  20. JJJIrish05

    JJJIrish05 Sergeant

ill take a look at the cables when i get home.....

so i can just download a boot disk, have to go to setup and just let it sit over night then? ok..... makes sense to see if it non HD hardware related.....

and i'm not too sure what you're talking about with the power management settings so after i do those two things i'll probably need a little help on this.....

    thanks!!!

Ok, so been really busy the past month with work, been out of town for much of it.... so i've just been using the work laptop lately and haven't really had any time for my gaming :-( ..... but anyways back to trying to figure this hole thing out.... first off i just got a new error a couple hours ago....

    **STOP 0x0000007F (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
    UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

    ..... not much help there.....

i was going to try and run a boot disk but i can't figure out how to make a CD boot disk since i dont have a floppy drive.... can i download the stuff for a CD on bootdisk.com or do i have to look somewhere else..... maybe its just because i've been up for over 22 hours but i couldn't figure it out.... i was hoping to run the cd tonight but i guess i'll have to do it tomorrow or sunday night......

Check the sticky at the top of the forum.

Most stop 0x7f errors are hardware failure.

    You overclocking? overheating?

If the ram checks clean, I'd suspect motherboard, then CPU, depending on the above answers.

no, no overclocking.... i dont think i'm over heating.... but maybe.... on speed fan my Core is at 45C.... that high? and whats a good memory tester? (keep in mind i dont have a floppy drive so it can't be one that runs with a floppy :-/)

ok.... so i finally ran the mem test.... ran it for 12 and half hours today while i was at work...... computer obviously didn't restart during that time.... and the memory passed the test 19 times with no errors.....

so looks like its software then?.... so what to do now....

  29. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

You truly believe it to be software?

I don't. If ram check out ok, then its usually the mb, but thats your call as to how you wanna handle it from there.

I can say in the entire time I've been doing this stuff, stop 0x7f ime has never been software related.

    Ever.

  30. JJJIrish05

    JJJIrish05 Sergeant

so what? do i have to like freaking buy a new mb or what can i do to test it?

  31. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

You are an IT guy. its process of elimination, right?

install windows to a new folder, if it still malfunctions under tests, then it has to be hardware.

You know its not video, its not sound, CPUs dont commonly die, its not ram....

    WHats left?

  32. JJJIrish05

    JJJIrish05 Sergeant

Ok.... but other than bad caps (which i'm going to look into more carefully when i have the time) what could be wrong with the motherboard? Anything i can test or look for?

  33. Adrynalyne

    Does it matter?

If its malfunctioning, you likely won't be able to repair it. I've had ~3 motherboards die on me in the last 5 years. None exhibited any physical symptoms. So, I couldn't tell ya what to look for there.

  34. JJJIrish05

    JJJIrish05 Sergeant

have you had any of them show symptoms like this? i'm just so confused on how i can go like 3 days in a row with no problems, and then suddenly have it restart like every half hour the next day..... but i guess the only way to find out for sure if to buy a new motherboard.... what would you recommend?... the one i have now is here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128321

I'll let someone else reccomend--I dont set myself up for a fall if the hardware isnt up to someone else's expectations.

Yes Ive seen these symptoms. It was caused by damage to the board from a rogue UPS--the house power was bad, and the AVR wasnt working properly. Too many voltage sags, and it damaged the board. I know it was the UPS because my wife's machine in the same room, on a different UPS never had a problem. I lost one motherboard to the symptoms you described, and a second to a perma stop error on boot. I also lost a stick of ram to this problem.
