I'm not sure where to ask this question, so I start here.

After doing a lot of maintenance on my granddaughter's Thinkpad, I get this message when Windows XP Home start up:

bttray.lnk.disabled - and then asking what program to use opening it.

Otherwise the PC now runs very nicely, given the little amount of RAM, so I don't think there are any viruses or spyware etc., so most probably I either have removed something that should be running, or the removing procedures have failed at some point.

So, if anyone know what this is, and how to fix it, I'll be very happy.

bttray.lnk is linked to Bluetooth adapter, so has one been on the PC at somepoint and then removed, could have been a USB Bluetooth dongle?

But what you can do is check if any Bluetooth software should be on the PC and re-install it or if its to be removed then goto Add/Remove and check there for bluetooth software or if not listed then use CCleaner ( install > run > click Tools > Startup and remve the bttray.lnk reference if listed from the startup list, this will stop it popping up at boot.

outside chance is Malware as many malwares use similar/same names to legit applications but install them in different non legit areas of the OS, so check for the location of BTTray.exe if on the PC.

I can find no traces of any Bluetooth being installed - no Bttray.exe etc.

Spybot did find some problems; when fixed indeed the startup problem did disappear. However, the special WIFI settings program & indicator (in the tray) has lost some of it's function, mainly the signal strength indicator. It's a IBM Thinkpad R50e.

At the present things seems to work just fine. So maybe we'd just leave it as it is?
