budget system

I am upgrading my computer, and I am wondering if I made the right decisions on the products I chose. I am on a budget here, so I am wondering if these will make my games look great and run smooth.
As of right now, I have problems with Half Life 2 , CS:S , ect. They look like crap in order for me to run them smooth.

I am currently on P4 2.4 GHz, 512mb of RAM, and a ATi Radeon 9800 pro video card...

This is what I ordered.

Motherboard I am getting for free, my dad had an extra motherboard
Desktop Board D945Pvs

Processor: Intel Pentium D 945 Presler 3.4GHz

Memory:
CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB)

Video Card:
BFG Tech GeForce 7900GS 256MB

Hope I made the right choice, if not, I will just have to return them, and exchange.

 

GPU and Ram seem fine but Intel processors are not recomended for gamers. They "eat" too much and they get a little warmer than AMD.

 

I really had no choice for the processor, other wise i would have whip out another couple hundred bucks for a new motherboard. As I said, I got the motherboard for free, so as of this point, I have to go with a intel processor.
So i got the best processor I could find within my budget.

If I had my own choice, I would deffinatly go with AMD.

 

That proc will be fine for gaming (Sailor, dont mean to be rude here but intel has the BEST procs for gamers although, yes the X2s are better than the PentiumDs) especially CS:S and HL2. Just make sure you have a PSU that can handle those parts, 500W or more probably. Im guessing your dad is a computer guy so he most likely has some he could get you.

Im surprised that your current rig isnt holding up with those games, it should be more than enough to run it well. Possibly it is underpowered but you would have been getting crashes and errors if it was.....kinda wierd but thats a nice build ya got goin there, GL with it
