Buffer Overrun?

What is a "buffer overrun"? I've dealt with, and solved, a couple of problems relating to buffer overruns, and even though I've managed to solve them, I never really knew what the heck a buffer overrun is... Now my Dad is having a buffer overrun problem, which we are in the process of fixing, but I still don't know what is actually causing the problem... In other words, I still don't know what it means to have a buffer overrun. What is actually happening, in general? I just want to know, for my own peace of mind. I don't like not knowing what's fundamentally taking place. Thanks.

Buffer overrun attack is a very common attack utilized by hackers or simply from poor code. This attack utilizes poor coding practices in C and C++ code, with the handling of string functions.

What operating system? There are some known exploits that you could find by searching Microsoft.com depending on OS. Being current on Windows Updates should eliminate that as a problem.
