The wicked prollem with Bugbear is that it disables the "cheaper" anti-viral programs, so beware.

XP Fix is supposed to be out (if not already).

Thanks so much, yes I am using Norton antivirus 2002. I have downloaded and opened an email attachment from a friend in Chili whithout scanning it. I had tried several times to scan it before downloading unsucessfully and the scan stopped and I had received a message from Norton(?) advising me that the attachment could not be scanned for virus. When I tried to view it without scanning I got a flashing message that the attachment was contaminated by bugbear and that Norton (?)couldn't repair the file.
    Don't know what to do.

Can you just delete the attachment.....?

or have you truly already opened it and infected the system?

if you have another computer, you can try to create the rescue disks (if you don't have them already)
Don't create them on this computer, because they will already be infected......

run the rescue disks and see what happens...

Also, I believe you can boot from the Norton CD (might have to change the BIOS to do this) and run scans but I am not sure....

In regards to the Bugbear, if anyone is interested, there's an interesting article in NewScientist online:

    http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993806

Apparently the BugBearB has a list of financial institutions embedded into it. Analysis doesn't say whether it's for targetting financial systems, if it does something different on those systems, or if it records your activity when you connect to one of there websites. Interesting.

BTW |Robot|Bender, for next time... If you get an e-mail attachment that Norton can't read, delete it immediately, as it's either corrupted and useless, or is a well-wrapped virus. The fact that it came from a friend means nothing, except that THEY are infected. Call or e-mail your friend to confirm they sent it intentionally (probably didn't), and have them try again if so. But if you still can't scan it, forget about it. If Norton can't read it, whatever it is won't be anything you'll want or be able to use.

Thanks, everyone. My friend never sent any email. The real sender has stolen his personal & business addressbook and have sent a massemail. They stole a real email too and stuffed the virus into the attachment.
