Personally I feel you are cheating yourself by getting the CPU/RAM deal, as there is faster RAM available for the i5.

Also, if you can afford it, look for a better GPU than the 9800GT.

Please note there is nothing wrong with any of these components but I feel you could get more performance for a small cost increase.

Also, make sure you purchase an extra side case fan for the case.

what RAM and GPU come to your mind? I just figured the 9800 GT was 1 Gb and DDR3 so it sounded good to me...

Owww how much i love these questions!

    Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping $250
Asus P6X58D Premium Intel X58 £300 (This is a real Kickass Motherboard)
    G.Skill Trident 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C9 2000MHz $200
Asus ATI Radeon HD 5970 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (The best money can buy) $600

Then that leaves $150 for a good PSUof your choice, theres too many or me to quote one. (I would recommend Corsair) if you can go modular.

BTW - This will handle ANYTHING you throw at it, and wont need upgrading for many years!

I have suggested this exact rig to many and have seen no complaints.

I just wish i had the cash!

@Burrell: You don't have to be an D&#*!%bag about it. I'm building this system to just allow me to play a few games and handle some other small stuff. If I'm going to dump a bunch of money into a computer I'm going to buy a Mac because they are better IMHO. So I won't be needing your specs I just want some pointers about mine because that's what I'm basing it on. So thank you but no thanks.

Most things this computer will see is prolly some games and internet surfing:
    World of Warcraft
    Starcraft 2
Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 2
    Half Life 2
    Sins of a Soler Empire
    Open Office
    Skype
Other IM's and yeah pretty much that's it...

Does anyone think my system will run into any compatibility issues? Also What's the best HDD setup for about 3 HDD's? I know I could do RAID 0, 0+1, and 1 but which is better? Is it normal to be worried about HDD coming in through the mail? Also If I were to set up this Rig with 3 Bios which ones should I use? I might try to do a little overclocking but I'm not exactly sure about how to do that ATM I'll prolly ask about that later but would it be recomended? I know this MOBO can handle it's RAM to go up and over 2600... but I guess liquid cooling would be better for that kind of thing huh? Again Thanks in advance

My two cents is that mac is overpriced and is NOT for gaming

I think a 9800gt Would be good for the games you play however the CPU may be to much power for what you need. Also the motherboard and PSU are way overkill.

I think all the parts will work without issues.

If you are doing stuff like that overclocking will not be needed

Also if you are going to pay $115 for a PSU I'd go with a Corsair for the same price or just a bit more.

  7. MagasCorada

    MagasCorada Private E-2

@pclover: I don't really need your two cents as the OP wasn't about what I'm planning on getting a Mac for. I'm obviously building this to make up for the gaming I'm going to not be doing on a Mac so I'm building a system with room for upgrades IF needed.

My question for you is why go with a different PSU? I figured a CoolerMaster would be great since the case is also CoolerMaster. What are the benefits of a Corsair?

Again... the MOBO was chosen because there's room for expansion/upgrading.

Corsair is much higher quality and alot more respected for PSU's then Cooler master

    I have a Corsair TX750W and it's AWESOME

Some other good brands OCZ Antec

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...pNo=3438609&sku=C13-2503&srkey=Corsair TX750W Same PSU as me and it's only $5 more then the cooler master one.

While I can appreciate the fact that you would like the answers to stay on topic, I would suggest that going forward you keep your responses more civil. When asking opinions on hardware, particularly at a computer website where most of the members are enthusiastic about the subject, you are going to get opinions that aren't going to help you. Stating that 'you don't want their 2 cents' is disrespectful. Please refrain from such comments in the future.

@LauraR & pclover: I'm sorry for being disrespectful. I just kinda get defensive when people bash on why I want a Mac. Forgiveness? :(

@Pclover: Thanks for the info! I'm sorry I was mean in my last post... But your PSU comment was very nice I'm probably going to be getting that one instead now. One more question for you. Is your Corsair SLI ready?

Magas, I'm not quite sure why you got upset, Burrell's suggestion wasn't to bash on your wishes, he gave you items that will see you in good stead for many years to come.
If you have te money to build a "Great" PC, why build a "Good" PC?

You said you only want to play those few games.......what about when a new game comes out that you can't run but want to play?
We call it "Future proofing" , buying low-med end GFX and CPU's is all well and good, but if you can afford to go higher and there's a chance you may need te extra power at some point, better to buy it now than have to rebuld it again in 18 months.
The people who answered you here know what they are talking about, the knowledge base on Majorgeeks is made up of many people with many experiences, no one will bash anything.

Ask for advice, thank people for their advice.....make descisions taking that advice into account.
It's your money, buy what you want, we just like giving people help and advice free of charge because PC's is what we do and enjoy.

Hope your new PC works out for you :)

Well, going for a triple headed motherboard(3XPCI-E) seems over the top to me. You did state expandability as being important but I don't see the need. As was said above , you could save some money by looking at CPU and memory separately. Also, if you get a dual-head mobo you can save enough money to get a
SAPPHIRE 100283L Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Retail

and your power supply will be able to handle two of these just fine. ATI have better bang for the buck than nVidia even though I'm an nVidia man for reasons other than gaming. Hope this gave you some other options.;) Heck, it takes me around 3 months before I nail down exactly what I need and want before I build. Ya know, not too much of this and not enough of that.:) Good luck.

Hi don't see much of an issue with compatability with what you have posted, although I would be going for a better GFX card than the 9800s.

What other HDDs do you have apart from the WD one listed in your spec list? As to RAID well depends what you want from this PC, RAID0 (not true RAID but never the less) gives you some extra speed, but no redundency so if one of the array HDDs fails the array fails and you have to recreate, RAID1 is good if you want stability and a backup, but in part you are wasting a drive.

    Scenarios could be for 3HDDs
    1. Raid0 with 2 HDDs in an array and the 3rd HDD as a backup drive, for saved data, files etc
    2. Raid1 with 2 HDDs, gives you backup, plus then the 3rd HDD can also be for backups and saved data etc
    3. All 3 HDDs seperate 1 for OS, 1 for say Music, Films and 1 for backups and saved data etc

an example of my main PC
    2x 74GB WD Raptors in Raid0
1X 400GB for saved data, docs etc
1X 400GB for Music, Films etc
1X 1TB for downloads and image/clone backups of the main OS drive (had a huge collection of ISOs off MSDN/TechNet and old Windows test versions etc that take up GBs of space)

Is it normal to be worried about a HDD coming through the mail, well not really, what is your worry? if its DOA then you return it, but generally suppliers package them up well for shipping and HDDs are very robust these days.

Before going down the route of Overclocking, get your new PC stable first.

@Nedlamar: Thanks for the support and again I'm sorry for bashing anyone... I'm over it and I'm sorry to anyone again.

TBH I'm not really in need of a new computer just something I figured I'd do cause I'm planning on getting into computer coding and such for a career choice. It'd just be nice to have a functional PC ATM to handle what I need. Later on again I'm planning on getting a Mac and Probably "Bootcamping" it so I can do my Windows stuff from there.

@augiedoggie: I understand that ATi is better bang for the buck but I've onlly had trouble with ATi stuff. I have an old Radeon 9550 that I used to have in my POS 4 yr old eMachine and it caused too much trouble with my Acer X233H monitor so with this rig I'm planning on getting my first Intel chip and my (semi-first) Nvidia setup.

I really kind of want to stay away from the crossfirex for now I really like the SLI option. One of the Main reasons I chose the board I did was because It has the NF200 Chip with the all the extra PCI pipelines which will allow all the the slots to still run X16 no matter how many cards I got in there.

@Halo: Thanks for the info on the RAID formations halo! I've actually seen your rig before on here when you were testing out the Flash Memory HDD's and I saw your beastly setup of Beastyness... But yeah I only have a little 100 and 150 Gb HDD's so I'm probably going to be getting a couple 500Gb HDD's over a period of time but That's about it for now. I unfortunately just found out recently that I have 18 viruses on this computer almost all gone now but 3 are still lurking around 2 of which are somewhere in my winsys32 Folder... =[
So I don't think very many files will be carried over to the new PC. If anything my backgrounds and such and maybe a few other pictures.

@Burrell: It's all cool I'm sorry I over reacted the only thing that really got me was the two extra posts you added in there... but it's all good now. I'm sorry and I understand you were trying to be helpful. The thing is I understand the whole "why build a good pc when you could build a great pc?" but I'm really looking at something that will last me over until the games start shifting over to Mac. Valve is already starting to do so, so I won't have that big need of a computer.

I'm really confused about graphics cards to be honest. I mean what's so bad about the 9800 i picked out? It has a Gb of GDDR3 isn't that pretty darn good? Also What RAM speed is the best? I thought the 1156 socket PCU could only handle like 2 different speeds 1333 and 10600? Am I wrong?

Also I don't exactly have 1200 to spend I'm going to be buying this thing in parts and pieces with my paychecks through out the year and with my Tax returns... so It's just a guestimate of what I'm probably going to be spending total.

    Things I've changed...

    Power Supply - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...pNo=3438609&sku=C13-2503&srkey=Corsair TX750W

    HDD (x2) - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2795126&CatId=139

Nobody has really answered this but what's a good Nvidia graphics card that is SLI compatible?

I think so I have a GTX 275 1792 MB and it runs every game I play. GTX 260 are damn good cards to.

    Bad Comapny 2 etc.

Nvidia is releasing new cards soon tho. GF100 is the newest one that should be good but is prob going to be like 700 at launch.

That's absolutely an insane amount of money to spend on a Video Card!!!

I have an xbox so I play Bad Company on that... but still I don't think I need any where near that for what I want to do...

Not really you said you had 1k to spend for a new pc.

Why would you post a gtx 260 and then say it's to much to spend?

Quado cards are expensive and not for gaming. 3d rendering cards.

I meant the 700 dollars as being realllly expensive.. But what do you mean by quado card?

  22. pclover

Oh I meant they are workstation cards that are very expensive but they suck at gaming. :-D

The high end one is like $2300
