Building a sitemap

A friend of mine asked me to build a simple website for her real estate business which I had done before, however, there is a few differences. The last websites I have built were for large companies and showed up when doing a google search for them. I have searched the internet and I have found things that say in order for her site to show up in websearches like google or dogpile I need to build a site page. I downloaded the google directions and I am soooooooooooo lost to say the least. Can anyone help me out with this. I need to make her site searchable by google and see if I can find a way to make it come up on the first page of the search.
