I read there is a “TORAM” feature in some versions of Linux that you can use a write protected mem stick/SD card to boot from and run entirely from RAM.

A clean boot every time would be an interesting defense against malware, etc.

I would like to try this just to build a simple low end portable that would just be used as a daily browser and not need much horsepower or cost.

Can anyone make a recommendation for laptop hardware and Linux distribution that has the drivers to support the hardware and the TORAM feature?

    Best regards,

All live linux distros can be run from a USB stick which is loaded into RAM. If you don't enable persistence, nothing is written to the stick.

Consider this though, every time you use it and open your browser, you have no saved bookmarks and it is like re-inventing the wheel. Do you really want this feature?

    Thanks PLODR,

Good point, I had not considered that. I had a key logger snarf a password and the bank thankfully stopped a fraud attempt. Time for a small surfer to block the creeps wanting my beans/cornbread money. Times getting hard.

Since browsers have a variety of configurable operating parameters that live boot to boot typically, I wonder it they also would get set to defaults every boot in a ‘live’ situation or if they could be written into the image before it was write protected?

Maybe there is a way to get that bookmark data in before switching to write protect mode on the stick?

    Thanks for the assist!!!
