    And shopping around new egg.

I wanting to spend about $300 on a processor. Which AMD chip would you recommend? This is going to be a gaming rig.

    Thanks!

Excellent. Thanks. And these will work with regular windows XP? I don't have to do anything special for the 64-bit?

Well, if you want 64 bit functionality, you will need the 64bit version of Windows XP, or a *nix OS.

Which Intel processor would you suggest for $300 or less?

"Just thought id say , i would not go for an amd rig if your going to be doing gaming , intels are mutch better for that.

All amd proccesors are 64 bit"

Wow. Quite a bit of misinformation in only 2 sentences. Good Job. ;)

#1 - Not all AMD processors are 64 bit. There are still some Athlon XPs floating around as well as some of the Socket 754 Semprons that are 32-bit only.

#2 - For gaming, AMD Athlon 64s post better fps than an equally priced Intel processor and in many cases beats out quite a few of the higher priced Pentiums.

In Conclusion, go AMD for gaming; Intel for compression/video editing; and AMD for anything else only because they cost less.

You sure you wanna do that?

Either of the two CPUs I posted above would trounce that P4 in games.

Let me rephrase. What is the primary use for this computer?

It will be all-purpose, but I'd like to run the latest games comfortably.

Well, the P4 will run games comfortably, but the AMD will do it for a longer time (It is more future proof).
