Hello

I just finished putting together my computer. It turns on, starts loading the harddrive, but then 20 seconds later it shuts down. everything is brand new except for the cpu fan, i took it out of an computer.

Have you installed an OS or are you trying to boot from a HDD that has an OS from another PC.
You could also download http://knoppix.net/ which is a live boot CD and you can boot directly from the CD

 

The HDD has an OS from another computer, but im thinking it should boot up, but it looks like it doesnt have enough power to stay on. Right now im a little lost.

Trying to boot to another machine's drive can lead to all sorts of problems, and the PSU is usually all or nothing - there is no such thing as "doesnt have enough power to stay on"...

I like Bill's idea about booting to a live distro. If it was my machine, I'd start from scratch, verifying each stage. Don't try to install the drive yet - start with just the mobo, RAM, and processor, make sure they are kosher, then proceed accordingly...

Baby steps...

 

i tried that booting without the hdd, same thing it shuts off after 20 Secs.

 

I have built a lot of PCs and 99 times out of 100 you will have to install an OS because the OS from another PC is linked to the Mobo from that machine (it a security thing to stop people copying the OS and loading it onto several PCs)

I think if you try the boot cd you will find that it fires up and unfortunately you will need an OS get it running.

 

In addition, much more information is needed...

What else have you tried? There are many options: re-seating the processor/heatsink, re-seating and swapping RAM modules, checking connections, ensuring the motherboard is not shorting to the case, etc...

Specs: what's the make and model # of the motherboard, RAM, processor, hard drive...what version and SP # of Windows?

 

motherboard intel g41m-p26, and the processor is intel celeron D, as soon as i turn on the computer, the cpu fan starts turning, then stops 1 sec later, then starts up again by it self, then it last 25 secs then shuts off, ny thing is would the be going off and on, then finally shuts off.

Can you get into bios,does your bios screen show?Hit del.to enter and check cpu temp.

Remove the cmos battery for 20 secs then replace while power is disconnected.

Have you used new thermal past on the cpu and heatsink?

 

try all so too make sure your MOB screws are not too tight if it is too tight some times the mother boards will not work correctly.Too tight of screws can cause grounding issues in some new cases.I have this happen be for where i had my mob too tight on the computer case and it would turn on for like a sec then stop.
