OK. I know those three files are DVD format video files. I have ripped, burned, converted, and created many DVDs. I'm no stranger to DVDs. My question is this: if the total combined size of all the .bup/.ifo/.vob files is under 700mb, can it be burned on a CD disc for playback in a home DVD player? Or does it have to be on a DVD disc for the player to recognize the DVD file format....

I suppose I could run it through NeroVision and create a VCD or run it through AGK or Dr.DivX, but if I don't need to do the extra work, why should I, you know?

I guess I could just try it.... what does a blank CD cost? 10 or 20 cents?

OK. I tried it. Nero 6.6 has an option to create what it calls a 'mini-DVD' which is essentially a CD with a DVD compliant file structure with all the .vob/.ifo/.bup files; the idea is to have it work in a home DVD player. So I tried it.... it turns out there was a problem with some of the files (one of the .bup files wasn't fully compliant) so I ran the .vob files through NeroVision3 and created a VCD instead.
So- if anyone cares: yes, you can burn DVD compliant file structures to a CD for playback in a home DVD player as long as the total size is 700mb or smaller, and as long as ALL of the files are present and fully compliant.
    So there.

Thanks Dlb! I will probably never use the info but I wrongly assumed the DVD player couldn't read a CD disc. I never thought that of course they can read a music CD so they could probably read a video CD. Your time wasn't entirely wasted ;)

many settop players can play mpeg files and a vob file is nothing but an mpeg container. If you want, you can rename a .vob to .mpeg and it will play on the PC. Now try putting it on a cd-rw and see if it will play on your tv.

Now that's interesting. I did successfully create a video CD and it works fine, but I never knew this about .vobs and .mpegs. My home player supports DivX and XVid playback too, so that's always an option, but I generally go with a more 'universal' format so that I can loan discs to friends and family that don't have Divx capable DVD players.

Yeah! I love being able to put 6 avi's or more on one dvd and play them on the TV. You know, if you have Gspot on your PC use it to open a vob and see what it says it is, MPEG-2. And in the Container window you will see its particulars, including how many audios and subs (other) it has. As long as the default audio is english you can rename a vob to mpeg and play it as such.
Virtual Dub Mod opens mkv and ogm containers and displays multiple audio and sub files, but for some reason with vob files it only shows the default audio and no subs. If you open the first 1gig vob, set the audio to direct stream and the video to full process and configure divx to home theater 1200kbps you will get around 300mb good quality avi. Of course if you were to append the other 3 or 4 vob's that make up the whole movie you would get a finished product way over a cd size but 3 or 4 could fit on one dvd (1300-1500mb), a bitrate setting of 780 usually ends up close to 700mb. Because of the excellent quality you can get (v dub does have a 2 pass) I often do this with the really good movies and leave the crap ones at 700mb. If a zombie or horror movie is all dark and you can't see anything, why use a high bitrate on it? On the otherhand, if the movie is bright and action packed, 1400mb makes for much better viewing.

Excellent tips! Thanks Appz! The next time I'm working with some vids I'll check this out, and lately I've been working on 'em alot so I'll check it out soon. Thanks again!

I actually just finished converting a set of 4 vob's from the dvd "Shootem Up" and although the first vob loaded only one audio with no other choices, the following 3 vob's asked which of 3 audio files I wanted to use , the first of course was english and I selected that, but it puzzed me why I didn't get that choice with the first vob. I also did not have the option of appending vob's to one another to create the whole movie. I had to convert the 4 separately then join them after they were avi's. Its nice that leaving the Audio in Direct Stream gives the final avi a 448kbps 5.1 surround sound audio track, but thats another reason to encode at a higher bitrate, that high an audio takes up some room which leaves less for the video.
