I have a movie saved on my hard drive, it is in avi format. Im new to burning, i burned the dvd with nero. I tried to watch it but half way through the movie it started to freeze and skip, and was just all messed up. I know its not anything rong with the movie because when i watch it on my computer its fine. While nero was encoding the video before it burnt it,(which took forever) I was doing other stuff on my computer, Could this be why the dvd got messed up. I have alot of movies on my computer that i would like to burn so if anyone could give me some information that i wouldnt know about it would be appreciated.

I burn movies almost everyday w/ Nero 8, Nero Vision......thats exactly why your movie came out the way it did.....it usually takes around 2 hrs for nero to transcode and burn to DVD, your best bet is to leave it be while its running its course, Nero is gonna take a huge amount of resources and if u start running other programs somethings gotta give.....i usually burn a movie a night, set it just b4 i got to bed. goodluck :)

What about running utorrent, or any other p2p while burning a dvd, good idea or not? Because i usualy have somekind of p2p program running, Should i shut it down before burning, or dont you think that it will affect it.

that really depends on your system.....your best bet , just to make sure that you dont waste anymore DVD's i would run it as a stand alone project.

i run utorent all the time and it doesnt interfere with nero at all. when burning a movie make sure you set burn sped to 4x burning it faster can cause skips etc

To be honest, I've NEVER had good results using NeroVision to convert AVI files. They have always come out grainy and jumped and skipped and were generally pretty bad, and it was slow. I tried NeroVision maybe 5 times and each time it did the same thing. I now use DVD Flick. It's free, and I've converted and burned over 150 AVI files to DVD without a single bad disc. It's a real good idea to disable any apps that don't need to be running (including screen savers) while doing the conversion. I leave uTorrent running all the time when converting and it hasn't caused any trouble, mainly because it's not a real CPU hog. If you don't mind paying for software, ConvertX and WinAVI are great, and WinAVI is probably the fastest one I've seen: from AVI to DVD compliant folders in under 30 minutes for a 700-800mb file. This is without burning. With DVDFlick, it takes about 75min to convert the same file, but this includes burning at 4x. I always burn DVD videos at 4x for best results. At higher speeds, the quality just isn't consistent. Some will be fine, other will have audio sync issues, and others might have occasional pixelation. Well, that's my 2 cents on the subject. Here's some links:
    DVDFlick http://www.majorgeeks.com/DVD_Flick_d5530.html
    ConvertX http://www.majorgeeks.com/ConvertXToDVD_2_d4689.html
    WinAVI http://www.winavi.com/en/video-converter/video-converter.htm
There's a how-to guide at the DVDFlick home page, but you probably don't even need it 'cuz it's really easy to use and figure out. The default settings are fine 90% of the time unless you want to add chapters. It has ImgBurn built-in for the burning, so be sure to set the burn speed in ImgBurn before starting your conversion, also put a blank DVD in the drive before starting.

nice input dlb....ive never had any problem w/ Nero what so ever, but i do like the fact that the other programs that u mentioned take about 1/2 the time, might have to go check them out myself ;)...thx again

Alrite new question I burnt 2 more movies with nero and had nothing else running and didnt touch my computer while burning. I cant play them in my ps2 cause it wont let me so ive been tesing them with me portabe(battery powered dvd player. The 2 new movies i burnt do the some this, they get 3/4 of the way through and then skip and get stuck and such, but if i play them in my computer everything is fine. Why is this, Maybe my portable dvd player cant spint the disk fast enough or something. Any suggestions? Or could this have something to do with not setting the burn speed to 4x?

A good rule of thumb for burning dvd disks is to choose a burn speed half of the media or dvd burners max speed. 8x Verbatim dvd-r on a liteon Dvd Burner rated at 8x for dvd-r BURN AT 4x. 8x Memorex dvd-r on a Pioneer Dvd Burner only rated at 4x for dvd-r burn at 2x speed. So which ever is the slowest rated, burner or disk, use half that speed. If you have 16x disks and a 16x burner rating for dvd+/-r then you don't have to burn at 4x speed you can use 8x unless it gives you problems.

If you have old slow disks 4x dvd-r rating but a newer burner 16x dvd-r rating for goodness sakes get some new disks and use the slower ones for burning data.

Its really not a good idea to use Nero to convert avi's to dvd and then burn them, use ConvertxtoDvd or Avi2Dvd (freeware) to at least get to the dvd files point (vob's and ifo files) then if you want you can open them with Nero Burning Rom and avoid all the stupid Start Smart crap where Nero is always wanting to convert stuff into it own formats and telling you its not enough room for one disk. Go into your Nero Directory (Ahead for Nero6 and Nero for 7 and above) and look in the Nero folder for Nero.exe and right click it "send to desktop" create shortcut. Now you have a way to open Nero Burning Rom on your desktop. Burning Rom is the original and the best part of any Nero installation. Just select DVD on the left and then scroll to Video-Dvd and select that and then click on new and you will end up with an empty VIDEO_TS folder to fill from the one you created with convertx or AvitoDvd or Dvdshrink or whatever. Now Nero will burn your dvd (at a resonable speed of course) without trying to reconvert anything, just as the files are from the converter.

As everybody who has read this far already knows, I agree. Appzalien makes some good points that I forgot about.... using Nero for the burning part of creating DVDs is fine, I use it all the time (I'm actually burning a movie right this very second!) to burn all sorts of stuff, and it's great. But there are so many other better programs for converting media files that are free (and MUCH faster), that using Nero for anything other than burning makes no sense (to me anyway) ;) Oh... wait, I have used Nero to successfully create VideoCDs from small media/AVI files, and those were perfect. It took over 90min, but they came out great, and play perfectly on standalone home DVD players.

I actually cheated and got myself a DVD player that plays Div X files (Toshiba cost me £30) I use nero to make a Data Dvd and on average can get 6 films on one disk which takes about 5 minutes to burn. Happy days :D

I had Nero, not anymore the best burner out is Cheetah dvd/cd burner by far, it's burns 5 movies on one dvd in about 5 minutes;)

i spent the day trying to get the lo-down on which 1 of these programs snaps out the fastest and the best. DVD flick...the first 2 times i tried to put a file in it, it just shuts off....3rd time reinstal.....i burnt a flick, it was faster but the quality was no-where near Nero 8, Cheetah burn was probably the worst 1. I first played the movie in my DVD player in my room on a 32 inch "regular" tv, all the burns looked good on it. When i played them on my 52 inch plasma toshiba ran w/ HDMI input from my DVD player they were all grainy except for the Nero 8 burn. Nero 8 may take longer to transcode but i can burn at 16x instead of 1/2 the recomendations and dont have to worry about any problems.....im still sold on Nero 8

Back to the question in que from mg154...its kinda ironic what happened today at work...i loaned a copy of the movie "300" that i burnt (w/ Nero 8) to a friend, he gave it back to me at work and said that it played part way thru and frooze. So i popped it in my DVD player and it ran fine all the way thru, i also have a buddy that has a DVD player in his SUV and it did the same thing. Try poppin that DVD in another DVD player, that maybe be the problem.....

Strange. I have been using various versions of DVDFlick for over a year without any issues, ever. All my burns have been perfect. They play back fine on my 2 DVD players at home, and on other DVD players at my friends' houses.... with some older versions of DVDFlick, the final movie would skip occasionally when the picture went to all one color (like if it went all white 'cuz the movie was at the north pole or something). But this only happened a few times, and was such a minor thing I never worried about it. This problem seems to have been worked out in the newer versions of DVDFlick.

Yea, i dont know why but i figured out that some of my dvds that would freeze half way through, play fine on other dvd players.

Can I set the burn speed from DVD Flick somehow? I don't see it there. I can launch ImgBurn by itself and set it before running DVD Flick which works. A little inconvenient with 2 DVD drives to always have to remember to do this but is that what you mean?
Also how can I tell what max burn speed rating is for the DVD drive? It's properties don't say.

If you launch ImgBurn and set the burn speed, it should 'remember' your choice and use it every time, it does when I run DVD Flick. I posted a screen shot of ImgBurn a while back that shows where to click. Let me know if you find it, if not, I'll post another one. You can Google search your DVDRW model number to find out the max burn speeds, or run the Nero Info Tool http://www.majorgeeks.com/download120.html

So you think DVD Flick is better than Cheetah DVD Burner?
