Burning .iso to DVD

I have a laptop with XP Home. I have used CDBurnerXP to burn an .iso from my hard drive to a DVD. Everything seems fine until I put it in the DVD player and I get a message, "incorrect disc". I have done this before but I'm not sure I used CDBurnerXP . I have tried both DVD-RW and DVD-R.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Try using ImgBurn to create the DVD, Caliban has a little tutorial on using it.

Failing that, you may need to burn it to a + disc?

I use DVD Flick http://majorgeeks.com/DVD_Flick_d5530.html. It will both encode and burn to a disc. the process takes about 25-45 min. I use to use 2 SEPERATE programs, one to encode, and one to burn, then I realized DVDflick would do both. Happy Hunting!! ;)

    What is a + disc?

    That didn't work.

Could it be that you are simply copying the .iso file to DVD as a data file? If so that isn't how you do it. CDBurnerXP has a menu item Burn ISO Image - that's the one you need.

Are you sure the ISO contains video files? Are they in DVD format?

And that is the one I've used, Thanks

I don't know - I assumed they were in the .iso format. I've done this before using a different app, I guess because I didn't have any problem then.

    Thanks

I suspect the iso file may be corrupt, as I've burned dozens of isos with CDBurnerXP without any problems at all.

If you go into>>my computer>> and select the D:/ (or which ever drive is your DVD containing the .iso image. The files contained will be displayed. Then you can tell us wether or not it's in .iso format, or a DVD or whatever.

isos are normally only used when creating a bootable disk, as that's the only way the boot sector can be written. If it's just data files - videos etc - no iso is necessary as the files can simply be copied to disk.

So what type of DVD is supposed to be being created with this iso?

I use Nero Burning Rom Version 7 to burn iso's to cd's or dvd's that program hasn't let me down yet.

But you got to make sure its compatible with your cd/dvd drives as older versions have trouble identifying newer model drives.

As you haven't answered the Q. I asked in #14 I think it's a reasonable assumption that with this iso you are attempting to copy a copyright protected disk. We don't support that sort of thing here, but maybe I have it wrong?

It's not always a reasonable assumption. Many distros of Linux are supplied as ISO files. Quite a few people use the 'save as ISO' option in ConvertXDVD and DVD Flick also. I save backups of all my OS discs as ISO files, along with any I have slipstreamed. I'm sure I'm not the only one either.

The OP is trying to burn an iso to disk, not save a disk as an ISO, so with the exception of your reference to Linux distros your are missing the point. However if he is simply trying to burn a boot disk or a Linux disk then fine, just say so.

I bought a video tape of a concert several years ago. About 7 years ago I had it transferred to a DVD by a local video shop. I than transferred it to my hard drive and it came out with a .iso format. I wasn't too techy then so I don't know how that happend. However, now my DVD has gotten scratched and at a certain place becomes quite distorted. Hence, my plea for help.

I do not copy copyrighted material.

    May I now proceed?

    Hi Ron,

I would try extracting the contents of the ISO to a folder so we can see the files. Then probably try CDBurnerXP again but specifically tell it you are burning a video disc once we know the files are in the correct format.

7zip will extract the files. Get the portable version http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/7-zip_portable which will extract the 7zip application to a folder. Then go into the folder and click on the 7zip exe. Browse to your ISO and choose Extract. It will put all the files into a new folder. Let us know what files are in the new folder. (Probably an AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS sub folder--but I want to make sure).

Thanks for explaining Ron. I said earlier that I thought the ISO might be corrupt and, now you have explained how it was created, I still think that's the most likely explanation for the problem you have had with CDBurnerXP. If you follow sach2's advice about extracting the files, and then burn those that are good using the Data Disk burn option rather than the Burn ISO option you should be good to go.

    Hi Earthling and Ron,

I think if the files are in DVD format and he uses CdBurnerXP then it would be select Burn Data Files from the splash screen when it first starts up then from the File menu choose Video Layout and browse to the folder containing the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders.

I don't burn many video DVDs but that is what I have did recently and it worked. I'm not sure the Video layout step is necessary, just putting it out there that that is how I did it.

OK. I've done this and there are no audio_ts or video_ts files. There is a autorun file that when I click I get a couple of .bmp icons, a CDRun.exe file, and a couple of others. when I tried to send them to you as an attachment the upload failed. Any other ideas?

I'm going to think about it. I'd like to know if you put the original DVD in your computer and go to My Computer and double-click the drive letter do you see the same files?

There is only one file; a video_TS. When I click on it, it opens to 9 video_ts.... files. I can't find anything like that when I click on the icon for the concert. I may have to try to burn a new DVD from the original video tape.

    Thanks!

That looks like the folder you want. Just drag it over to your desktop to make a copy.

Then create a new empty folder and rename it Concert. Inside the Concert folder create another new folder and rename it AUDIO_TS. Then go back to the desktop and move the VIDEO_TS folder into the Concert folder.

So now you have a Concert folder with an empty AUDIO_TS folder and also the VIDEO_TS folder with the 9 files inside.

Then in CDBurnerXP choose to write DATA to disc. Then under the files tab select Video layout and browse to the Concert Folder. If it accepts the folder then you should be good to burn.

    ****
Just to be sure inside the VIDEO_TS folder the 9 files have names that end in .IFO .BUP and .VOB correct?

First, the files did have those subnames.

I tried to copy the file to the desktop and after a bit it stopped with an error message: "cannot copy VTS_01_1: data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Could this have something to do with the scratches on the DVD?

    Appreciate your time and trouble.

Yes, cyclic redundancy means it is having trouble reading the CD.

I'll think about it. Someone may recommend a program other than explorer to try to copy the files.

I don't want to jump around too much but one thought I had was using imgburn to Create an Image file from Disc. And then unzipping that ISO to see if it lays out the video files differently. If that unzipped ISO has the VIDEO_TS folder visible it may burn successfully. (I'm thinking when you originally copied the disc to HD, it may have been written as a non-standard ISO.) I'm not sure imgburn would have any more success copying the CD/DVD but it might be worth a try.

Again, I'm going to think about a way forward I'm just putting ideas out there.

When I make copies using imgburn or CDBurner XP I just get a weird looking thing that seems to be part of a picture or something. I can't do a thng with it such as open, copy or other stuff. I'm going to look into making a copy from the video over the week end. I'll let you know.

Good luck on the copy process! :)

I've been thinking a bit and perhaps concentrating on the original ISO copy might be your best bet. If it is the correct size (meaning large enough to actually contain all the data) then perhaps there is still a way to extract that data.

When you get a chance right click the folder that 7zip created during extraction of the ISO and select Properties and let me know the size. Then look at the sizes of the visible files and if they don't add up to anything near the total folder size we should look for hidden files. [In explorer Tools>Folder Options>View tab>tick the circle for "Show Hidden Files"] Are any other files visible? If not, what are the sizes of the files you do see?
