I prefer butter, but my doctors prefer a low-fat diet, so currently it's Smart Balance margarine.

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries, when margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

    Facts about margarine:

a.. Very high in trans fatty acids

b.. Triples risk of coronary heart disease

c.. Increases total cholesterol and LDL (a bad cholesterol)

d.. Lowers HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol)

e.. Increases the risk of cancer by up to five fold

f.. Lowers quality of breast milk

    g. Decreases immune response

    h. Decreases insulin response

    Forgot the best part:

YOU can try this yourself: purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in
your garage or a shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a
couple of things - no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go
near it, (that should tell you something) it does not rot, or smell
differently... Because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on
it, even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to
grow on...Why? because it is nearly plastic.
Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

That looks like a good product G.T. but I'm betting that most margarine users buy the cheap crap. How does it compare pricewise?

i have ALWAYS been suspiscious of margerine. i never did believe that butter was bad for you. i tend to use half butter and half EVOO for cooking. i have to add that american butter doesnt taste the same as english butter, (or even new zealand butter which is the cheapest you get in england) i think it must be the proccessing. i have just discovered kerrygold butter in the fancy cheese section of my supermarket. it is $6 for 8oz. (about 10 quid!!) so i am gonna get some for christmas, but obviously cant afford to eat it all the time.

Pretty comparable, IIRC, although I just went from butter to this a month ago, thanks to a nagging doctor, and went straight to this in the margarine section. I wasn't consciously price shopping, but the prices I noticed seemed pretty close.

And one molecule away from being plastic. Set a tub outside and see if any critters come near it.

If it is hydrogenated, it is one molecule from being plastic.

Lots of things are just one or two molecules away from being something else. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is "but one molecule from" water (H2O), but I don't recommend drinking it. Similarly, Ozone (03) is "but one molecule from" oxygen (O2), but the former can create serious respiratory distress, while the latter can alleviate it.

Seems to have a common origin:

I can't answer either, because it depends what I am eating. Scones HAVE to have butter, but mostly we have margarine in this house :) Or shortening for cookies
