Buy laptop HD with OS already installed?

    Hi,

I need to know where I can go to buy a laptop hard drive with Windows XP or 2000 installed on it. My laptop's HD is destroyed but the computer itself is fine. And I need the HD to have an operating system installed on it because I wouldn't be able to install an operating system on my laptop without a docking station -- which I don't have.

If anyone could point me to a seller of this item I would appreciate it!

I can't help replying as curiosity has gotten the best of me. I don't know of and am unaware of any companies that sell hard drives with an OS preinstalled. This would mean that it was installed with a specific system configuration installed, motherboard chipset drivers, video drivers, and the like already on there. This would cause you a lot of problems if you installed such a hard drive in your computer.

Why do you need a docking station to install an OS? Doesn't your laptop have a CDROM? Please reply as I'm really curious about this one! :)

After my initial reply to your post, I read all yours. You have mentioned three different brands of laptops, Sony, Compaq, and Toshiba. Which type are you actually using? If I misread anything, please forgive! :)

I have a bunch of laptops. I'm a gadget collector. The laptop in question has a very slim casing, so it's impossible to install a cd-rom drive in it. That's why I would need a docking station to install an OS on it. And it doesn't allow booting from an external usb device, so unless I get a docking station for it I won't have much luck. The only other way I can solve this quandary is by buying someone's used laptop hard drive (or finding a reseller of used laptop HD's) that has an OS already installed on it. That way I can just install the hard drive and I won't have to waste any money buying a docking station.

I hope this clears your questions up.

Plug the the new HD into one of your laptops with a cdrom install the OS then switch it to the laptop you want it in. ;)

Why didn't I think of that? Thanks Rikky!

But I still am interested in my initial question being answered. Does anyone know of a company or an internet posting board where I can buy a used HD with an OS already on it?
