looking to get a processor/mobo combo

any recommendations? Price range 150-300max and INTEL, or any combo including a mobo-cpu around this price

ive had an amd1800+/mobo combo, now it may not be the processors fault but ive never gotten that system to work flawlessly... while every intel system i had worked fine... just preference for me now.

150-300$ and INTEL based any advice or recommendations will be sincerely appreciated.

thx splitter but my preferences are intel, so do u have any choice for intel products?

and if i get a processor with the 64 bit thing do i need the new windows version like windows xp 64 or whatever?

I don't know a lot about the new intel CPUs but you should definately get one with 64 bit, it will work fine with any version of windows, x64 just has extra stuff for athlon 64 users, 64 bit isn't really useful now but in the future, and with win dows vista it will probably replace 32 bit technology and you will need it to run certain apps. vista will run on 32 bit but 64 bit is better:p also, what do you use your computer for?

First off, save some money and go AMD, performance vs price is always AMD. The reason you would WANT an AMD 64 and up is because they are architecturally (sp) faster then 32bit processors, using 64bit OS or not. 300$ doesn't buy you much off intell.

i dunno i just always see "issues" with AMD relationed system alot more vs people with INtels... so i was trying to go with intel...

but when asking this question around on a few boards everyone seems to be saying get an AMD... i realize the price but if price were no matter which would you get?

and also there are SO many different ones to choose from.. like 64 bit and like p4 PRESCOTT or things like that so many "models" which one exactly should i get?

just for performance gaming being the focus....

Every Intel Pentium I've ever had to deal with has gone on the Blink, where as I've still got a ten or so year old AMD I can fire right up everytime.

If cost was not an concern I would go with a high end AMD, AMD uses an on die memory controller thing so it is faster than a p4 also, AMD has a better upgrade path, buy a socket 939 and you can get anything from a cheap sempron to the Fx-57 or a dual core cpu, intel has dif socket ttypes for everything and they change it more often. Also it's not a big deal but AMD cpus usually run cooler than intel, tests also show that AMD performs the best in games.

Definately AMD for gaming as you get more bang for the buck. Take a look hear for a budget gamer (more than $300). http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=OTAw
If any way possible go dual core as that is the future.

    how do these sound?

    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...40&CMP=BAC-hardocp1205&ATT=ASUSA8N-SLIPremium

are these compatible, and do i need a motherboard this pricey??

or are their CPU/MOBO combos equivalents?... combos are usually a bit cheaper

owning both amd and intel I'd go with amd. Intel keeps the room warm and toasty though :) seriously though the amd pc slightly outperforms my intel pc (3.4 gig prescott versus 3700 sandiego core) but intel idles at 39c maxes out at 53c whereas amd idles at 33c maxes out at 39c. no stability issues in the least :)

P.S. dont really need sli mobo unless you plan on running sli just get an nforce4 or nforce4 ultra motherboard

    heres what i went with...

    MEM 512x2|CORSAR TWINX1024-3200C2PT - Retail (Qty=1,Price=$99.00)

    MB ABIT KV8-MAX3 K8T800 754 - Retail (Qty=1,Price=$139.00)

CPU AMD 64 |3000+ ATHLON 64 RT - Retail (Qty=1,Price=$139.00) <-- venice btw... doesnt say it here

i went with the board vs some other ones because then i could keep my AGP video card... i didnt feel i needed to upgrade that too..

    thanks guys!!

That amd a 754 socket? because if that AMD is 939 you'll never fit it in there; for that price on the board, you should've purchased a 939 board with AGP slot, 754 is a dead end in terms of upgrading.
