buying new graphics card

for some reason my Verto geforce 6600 gt doesnt work very well with half life 2 so I decided I'll buy a new graphics card. I was wondering which one would you suggest for games like half life 2 and doom 3.

If it helps my system specs are 3.0 ghz and a gig of memory

 

HL2 is programed for Ati VGA card and Doom3 for Nvidia so you can play it at a normal setting graphic card, do not lose your money for that.

Well I'm not getting a whole new card, but I'm returning this one and getting another one, so I was wondering which one would be better from a 250-300 price range, would this be my best bet?

which drivers are you running? and what do you mean by 'doesnt work very well'?

your system specs are fine. its more than likely a driver issue.

 

I just downloaded the newest forceware, by not running well I mean it stutters, if you have ever played the opening "wake up mr freeman" speech is very stuttery his voice is basically what lags and you can see him skipping a little bit, could you link me to a good set of drivers? This is my frist time running on a good computer my last computer was like 1.7ghz with a voodoo card, so i'm new to gaming. Oh yah also adding to my specs I have dual processors or at least that's what my specs say.

There are some thread at OverClocking, modding and cooling at MG of VGA card to get higher core/mem for perfomance you should read.

the newest wave of Forceware drivers are tough... some of them have the bug fixes and sacrifice performance, others are rock solid and medium performance, and others are very high performance but somewhat unstable.

its been a while since i fooled with drivers, but I'm currently using the 77.30's
previously, I found that the 66.97's were the most stable/decent performance for my card (6800GT). I have my brother running a 6600GT and his HL2 plays fine.

keep in mind that the stuttering is a known issue with steam and hl2, and though they supposedly fixed it, certain drivers still don't play nice.

 

yah that's what I was thinking that maybe it's the game who knows though, maybe I got a faulty card, maybe it's the drivers I'll try all the possible solutions... one more question (thanks for answering the others btw) but if worse comes to worse and I do get a new card will I be able to uninstall all of these drivers? or will they clutter my computer? If you can't tell I'm OCD about that stuff

 

uninstallation shouldnt be a problem at all. if you do a search on here for Driver Cleaner, you'll find some walkthroughs on how to wipre out drivers.

basically-- uninstall the display drivers from add/remove programs, reboot, enter safemode, run Driver Cleaner. if you're installing a new card, this would be when to do it. if you're upgrading (or going to older drivers) then you'd just reboot, and install the drivers.
