Hi- Going to buy a new Dell.I was going to by 512mb with 1 dimm. I was thinking I could buy another gig and place that along side. It seems pretty expensive through Dell. Anyone have any opinions on this and where to get it?
pci express is the kind I would need.
    Thanks

Can't comment on USA stores and prices, but suggest that you buy the biggest capacity single stick of RAM that your laptop will support. Maybe 1 gig if you can afford it. Reason for this is that will allow maximum expansion later. Say 1 gig now, will allow another 1 gig later giving 2 gig if BIOS. etc., will support it. Whereas if you buy 512mb now that may only get to 1.5gig maximum, with the addition of a 1 gig stick later. All of my comment is probably irrelevant as most users get by adequately on 256-512mb of RAM depending on their OS.

For most OS's, the more RAM the better. XP experts please step in. Bazza

You'll run comfortably with 512mb for now, I'd only go up to 1.5 max with mine probably. www.newegg.com or www.tigerdirect.com are good sites that I know of for US shopping.

PCI express is for video and other cards, not for ram.

As far as how much to get, what are your system specs?

If your motherboard supports dual channel, I would certainly get another identical memory stick to enable it.
