I'm gonna keep all other internals of computer, but buying new motherboard/processor. What should I buy? I was thinking of getting a 64 bit processor but are they worth the money right now? I'm looking for a good combo as good if not better than a P4 prescott 3.0E, and that will also (if possible) use my DDR 400 ram I currently have. Thanks in advance.

Thats what I did , P4 and new but old (2004) motherboard (intel) ,got it all from e-bay works great! way faster than my P800 intel se440bx-2!

I would go AMD theya re the best right now. definately go socket 939 or wait for AM2. the 3700+ is a good single core cpu and the X24200+ is probabyl the best value dual core right now. all AMDs are 64 bit which is important since vista will
support 64 bit and have improved use of dual core. 939 is also very upgradeable, anything form a single core 3200+ to an FX-60 the best cpu on the market. and ASUS makes good stable mobos, so does DFI but tehy are more expensive.

I have an ASUS mobo right now, and that is what I think went to crap. I'm looking for something where I can get mobo/processor combo for around $300
    What is Vista?

With a socket 939 mobo could I use my existing DDR400 Ram?

I have a P4 3.0E prescott right now which I "think" is fine. I am having problems with my motherboard I believe. I have a post up now about it in another thread.

What is advantage of single/dual core? Wouldn't dual core be a LOT more expensive?

Is 64 bit processor worth it? I don't want to go crazy and spend a boatload of money.

maybe you ahd a bad experieence but ASUS are generally very stable.
If the RAM is 184 pin then yes, no if it is ddr2(240 pin)
What socket type is your prescot, I can't reccomend a mobo for it unless I( know.
Dual core has 2 processor cores so it makes multitasking easier, for example you can be encoding videos and gaming at the same time.
64 bit is worth it, it is the standard for AMD, vista is the next windows operating system.
one more question, is your case micro ATX? what kind of computer is it?

If you choose to get a new CPU
This is a good mobo for the price

Since dual core is out of your budget you could go with this.

    My ram is 184 pin.

processor is a socket 478 prescott. I have decided though if I'm going to replace motherboard I'm gonna replace processor as well if it's not crazy expensive, however cost effective though, I *may* just upgrade the motherboard, I'm just not 100% that it is the motherboard that went bad. I'm SURE the hard drive is good (tried 3) I believe the ram is good (Tried 4 sticks)

It is POSSIBLE my processor is also worn out and still working but messed up. Dunno if there is an in-between for a processor.

Case is regular ATX computer I built myself.

I would go with the mobo/cpu combo I mentioned above, that should be compatable with everything, and the 3700+ is a good cpu, i have the 3500+ and love it.The cpu is probably fine though, cpus usually work or they don't, they don't just BSOD or slow down like other parts, if it was the CPU your pc wouldn't run at all.

sorry for the dumb question, don't know much about AMD, always been an intel guy. How would this processor compare to a 3.0Ghz prescott? Would it be better/worse? Says 3700+ does that mean it would be comparable to an intel 3.7Ghz?

Also I'm running 8x AGP Geforce 6800 video card. Would have to run that card with my motherboard, and the motherboard you recommended doesn't seem to have agp unless I'm blind. Any other recommendations? Thanks for all your help :)

yes, the # does give an idea of how AMD comapres to intel 3700+=approximately 3.7ghz pentium 4, AMD uses and on die memory controller so even though they have lower clock speeds they score as high or higher than the intel equivalent. And no that mobo does not have an agp slot. It is a pretty nice card so maybe you shoudl look for a board with pci-e and agp, pci-e is the new thing but if you already have a 6800.

the ASUS is better quality but this has agp and pci-e so it would support you card and a future upgrade to pci-e might want to look for some input on this board, it seems some people on enwegg have had problems with it but overall it is decent, and cheap.

and taht board doesn't support X2 cpus, just though i would point that out.

I *think* I'm gonna go with AMD processor. What would be faster overall for gaming though? A dual core 3.0 ghz Intel or Amd single core 3500+ intel?

Also I'm running a 800Mhz FSB now. Would I notice much of a speed increase with an AMD 1000FSB?

Here is processor I'm running now:

What would be a good upgrade from this processor? Thanks for the advice.

how bigs your boat:confused: ,whats best between a dual core intel or a single core amd 939 3500-- the dual core intel, but you aint gonna get a dual core intel anything for the price of a single core amd

amd still hold the crown for performance gaming whatever your processor budget, also if you upgrade to a pci-e motherboard you will need a new video card and power supply :)

    what about this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116001

Sorry for all the questions, I just can't test these processors and don't want to make a mistake now and regret it later.

Since I am forced to change my motherboard I figure I will go ahead and upgrade. That being said, here are my current system specs. Please tell me what will (motherboard and processor wise be an upgrade for me. Here is what I'm currently running.

Intel Pentium 4 3.0E ghz Processor

ASRock P4V88 Socket 478 VIA PT880 ATX Intel Motherboard

1x pqi POWER Series 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory

    2x pqi 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model MD441GUOE-X2 - Retail

    Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L300S0 300GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM

    Apollo 6800 128-RD Geforce 6800 128MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card

That is all I'm currently running for mainboard stuff. What should I upgrade to that will give me a noticeable performance boost for the money? Thank you very much for the recommendations/info.
