I am trying to install wine-0.9.28 on Ubuntu. I get an error message saying no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH. How do I know if I have a compiler and how do I get it in the path?

The compliers are not installed by default. Goto Add/Remove Applications and install the Developer tools or similar. To compile Wine make sure you install all the development packages for all the package dependencies.

Open Adept or Synaptic as found in the System Menu or in the Add/Remove Programs menu.

There is a search engine in either and complier should find the package. The Debian packages are not always the latest but they are stable.

What are you trying to install in WINE?

You may have to enable some repositories- See the wiki on the ubuntu home page for directions on this.

I downloaded it from another computer and used a usb drive, but I just dragged it to the dektop. I managed to extract it, but it's still on the desktop and doesn't show up in Add/Remove or in Synaptic.

Can you drag it on top of Synaptic or can you right click and open with to select Synaptic?

Do a search for wine in Synaptic and you will find a version there that will be installable or will tell you what you need for it to compile.

When I search "wine" nothing comes up in either one. Synaptic is not an option in the open with menu. It won't let me drag and drop either.

I want to use it to install cingular connection manager, but I am not sure about driver compatibility. Not even sure if it will work after I get it installed, but I am making the attempt as it's my only way of connectiong to the internet atm.

Okay, so I had the wrong file. Didn't know you had to have specific files for a specific distro. So I now have my .deb and I have wine in Synaptic. I have the package installed but I am not sure what the nest step is.

    Try winecfg from a terminal.

Then to install something, you will type wine "path of executable"

    Minus the quotes.

    Same for running it.

the wine files should be kept in your home folder (mine are).

It is generally a hidden folder.

I got it to start, but during the installation the terminal spat out a bunch of gibberish and then quit. I have the program already installed in my windows partition, but it doesn't show up in .wine then drive_c/Program Files like it would be in windows. The only thing in there is the common files folder and it's empty.

Did I not configure something right?

I would suggest you venture to the Ubuntuforums and try to see if anyone responds there.

Thank you, Bored for the link.

I am curently trying to install this but I ran into some problems.
This is the set of instructions I am trying to follow.
    http://www.gprsec.hu/modules/forum/viewtopic.php?t=61

I have done step two, because he said do that before installing the dependencies. When I try to install Getopt Long I get two messages:

    I type, make Makefile.PL

    I get,

"no rule to make target 'Makefile.PL'" or "Nothing to be done for 'Makefile.PL"

I don't understand how to install dependencies either. When I type apt-get install libcompress-zlib-perl, I get

Package libcompress-zlib-perl is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, had been obsoleted, or is only available from another source.
E: Package libcompress-zlib-perl has no installation candidate

    What does "E:" mean here?

I have tried the ubuntu forums, but no one has responded to me.

    Update:

Okay, I had to type, perl Makefile.PL and then the rest of the commands as they appear. Seemed to install. I didn't see any error messages.

Still working on the dependencies. I'll keep playing with it.

sometimes it is most frustrating that it is simply a capitalized letter or as you see reversed characters.

I did not install as described, I don't have any apps that I must have WINE on this system.
