C Drive Failing (win xp)

Have not been able to google this elsewhere - so please excuse the question if you have found the answer somewhere (and YES, please enlighten me to your search techniques !)

I have seen about 10 hard drives fail from people I know.

The C drive is no longer bootable.
Now, in some cases, have been able to do a CHKDSK /F (or /R) and the computer reboots normally.
In other cases, needed to do a system restore/repair.

In still, in others, reinstall from scratch (fdisk, format, install).

BUT in rare cases, the C drive is totally unbootable.

AND YET THE DATA REMAINS INTACT (as a cable select SECOND DRIVE)

Ok. Is this my imagination? Have I gone bonkers?
Is this a new form of virus - is it affecting the boot sector of a C drive, and yet, still letting it be "read access" as a slave / cs ????

Please advise.

This is more than likely not a malware problem so I'm moving it to the Software Forum.

I have heard of a recent (just a week or so ago) Windows update that has cause many PCs to crash. I don't have the particulars right now! Perhaps someone else has the info available. I'm not saying this is definitely the issue but it sounds similar to one I saw last week that occurred after doing the Windows patches.

I believe that the hotfix that chaslang was referring to was kb908531. It has been reported to cause numerous problems with HP hardware and some programs, as well as other side effects. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and see if it is listed.

Microsoft announced this week that they are deploying a patch for the patch that should fix the bad patch ..... release on Tuesday this next week.... will see!!
