C++ Pinging a Modem

I am learning C++, and i need a way to send a 3 letter string to a modem. I know how to do everything but send the string to the modem. So, how would i go about "talking" to it?

 

You will need to find the address first, but this code should get you somewhere near.

To clear things up; I need to send "ATZ", to the modem, which i on port 'COM1'.
