C Program Files folder problem

Hi Gang: Need help. As part of the powerup of WindowsXP desktop, a "folder" titled C://Program Files//microsoft pops up. It is blank, ie, contains no folders to open and/or delete, and I can get rid of it by pressing X in the upper right hand corner; however, I cannot seem to find a way, using the menues on the left side of the program file, to cause it to stop popping up at every powerup of desktop. It is most irritating. I know one or more of you can tell me how to stop it popping up when I power up. Thanking you in advance. Lee Marelli, The Mental Wizard (except for this one.)

 

Odd.... click Start > Run and type msconfig and press Enter. Then click the 'Start Up' tab and look through the list for something that looks like it would open that folder, or it might also list the path you mentioned above ( C:\Program Files\Microsoft ). If/when you find it, uncheck the box, click OK, and restart the PC. Hopefully that will do it!

If msconfig doesn't help Autoruns will find everything starting automatically and allow you to stop it.

Thanks for the quick response, DLB. I found checked box that said "WKDect" followed by "C://Program Files//microsoft" followed by "HKCU/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version." My concern is that if I remove the check, click OK and then restart am I wiping out a critical program file as I do not understand what WKdect nor HKCUetc. really means.

It appears to be being generated by M$ Works, so if you have Works but are not using it you could uninstall it.
