No, it's just called a cable internet connection. As far as I know, it has no acronyms, abbreviations, or technical designations.

Cable and DSL are two forms of broadband internet connections.
    Ethernet
A local-area network (LAN) architecture developed by Xerox Corporation in cooperation with DEC and Intel in 1976. Ethernet uses a bus or star topology and supports data transfer rates of 10 Mbps. The Ethernet specification served as the basis for the IEEE 802.3 standard, which specifies the physical and lower software layers. Ethernet uses the CSMA/CD access method to handle simultaneous demands. It is one of the most widely implemented LAN standards. A newer version of Ethernet, called 100Base-T (or Fast Ethernet), supports data transfer rates of 100 Mbps. And the newest version, Gigabit Ethernet supports data rates of 1 gigabit (1,000 megabits) per second.

Well, not being at your house, it's really kinda hard for any of us to guess what you have. ;)

If you have cable, then you have broadband (which is basically a general term for "really fast internet").

Everything else is simply the wiring (VERY simply...I know I'm not giving all the answers). Click on the links Just Playin gave, you'll learn a lot.

Why is it so incredibly important to you that you find out what kind of connection you have? Sounds like you have cable, given the original question. Cable is cable...the only differentiation is where your speed is capped.

The reason it is so important is because I get asked what connection I have, and I don't know so I guess. Also i want to learn more about computers. I want to do a system reinstall, because someone said it would help, but was worried because I didn't have to disk and or cds, but I found some. Not sure they are the ones I need. I found the 3Com and I now know it's Fast Ethernet, but on this pc it's so slow. So I want to do something about. Right now looking though about 100 cds I found. Some in bags and boxes, lol. But I found the 3Com and a Aptiva diagnostics and utilities cd-rom, not sure what thats for, but if I can get help i would really be grateful. Should I reinstall? And can anyone help me learn more about this. I'm using a IBM Aptiva with Windows 95 and 32 MB of Ram

The reason your connection is slow is that you're running a computer that's almost as old as you are with not nearly enough memory and an ancient operating system. It doesn't matter what you hook it up to, it's going to be slow, because it can't handle it.

I have an IBM Aptiva with 32MB RAM sitting on the desk in the corner in this room...you're lucky it even WORKS with cable.

As for telling people what connection you have, tell them "cable". That should be sufficient information for anyone asking.

lol, really, I didn't know that I was lucky that it was working, but it's funny to hear that. So do you think I should do the system reinstall I have all the disc I need now, the 3com and the product recovery cd. It over 10 years old, ancient, but it still runs and when I can't use the labtop it comes in handy.

    It's surprising what will work...

One of my hobbies is retro hardware, and I have my cable connection shared though my lan.

    It's perfectly usuable with a 486 laptop with windows 98se, in 24megs ram. :)

Yeah I'm glad it works. I'm trying to learn about PHP and MySQL. So if it didn't work it woould suck. Need advice on this too, i tried downloading a firewall but when I look at the my c drive to start the download the icon for the fire wall(Sygate personal firewall) was a icon the is a document that was created with WordPad, looks like a notebook with line and a "A" on the lower right hand corner. And then I tried a anitviru, AVG. The download icon was ok it stared the download and then 5min later when it looked like it was done it said it needed a DCOM95 , so asked and got help and was able to download it. I tried again and at the end wwhen it looked like it was going to connect, it said it failed because:
    Local machine: installation failed
    Installation:
Error: Action failed for file license_us.txt: creating file....
    File opening failed.
    No such file or directory

I don't know what that means. well if anyone can help I would be veery thankfull, and or is there a firewall and antiviru that would work best on this pc?

For actual technical advice, you're going to be a LOT better off posting in the proper tech forum rather than in the Lounge.

Well, yeah...you can also talk to the neighbours using two tin cans and a string...but why would you? ;)

    Because you can?

With the 'right' software, not this overblown modern stuff, the performance is surprisingly good, pages rendering in a second or two etc...

You could (just as reasonably) say 'why waste money on ever bigger/faster machines just to compensate for lazy bloated coding?'

Depends on what you want your P.C. to do. For emails and word processing, a 486 and above will suffice. DVD playing will require a lot faster and more graphics power. Playing high and games will require the consequently high-end machine.

It's just "different strokes for different folks".

I have high end equipment, because that's what I do for a living, and because, "I can"!

well right now I can't do nothing. I formated the comp, well I did it three time necause I messed up the first to times, it's my first time doing anything like this, I didn't realize this pc had IE 3.0 so now I can't see other sites. I can go to them but the text is mesed up and somtimes pages don't load, now I'm trying to get someone to help me upgrade my IE3 to a 4 or better but the site and help I got so far haven't help because the pc has IE 3.0 and I can't download what I need at the moment, I was able to download CCleaner, and then I tried avg but need IE 5 for that and then a download manager but that didn't work. So if anyone can help with that.
