    hey,
i recently got as new computer. I have cable internet so my speed should be pretty good. Unfortunatly when i try to download something it goes outrageously slow. First off, don't say that it could be the websites bandwidth limit or whatever because it happens for every single download from every single site. Another thing is that when i open up the internet connections it says that I only have a LAN connection. Is this all i need? According to the LAN it says that a have a 100 mbps and i know that that is a very fast connection. I do not know if i need a WAN connection or what that even does. Please help me i dont know what else to do!

Define "outrageously slow". You see a speed of 100 Mbit because that's the speed between your PC and the cable modem. That's LAN speed. A dedicated 100 Mbit connection to the Internet itself would cost you several thousand dollars a month.

Most cable Internet connections range between 128 kbit and 1.5 Mbit. That would be effective max download speeds of ~12 KB/s or ~150 KB/s respectively.

Try the speed test at DSL Reports. Next, look at what ISP you have and what package you paid for.

    1. What is the Speed that your contract with the ISP calls for?

Example: My contract is for 6Mb/sec. and I get stable Interent Download of 600KB/sec. (that is very good). Locally, between the computers (No Internet), I get 80Mb/sec which translate to about 10MB/sec. local File transfer

    2. How your System is connected?

Example: I have a Modem that is connected to a Wireless Router that feeds three Wired computers and two Wireless, and it look like this, http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg

    1. i believe that it is 6mb/sec
    2. connected directly to a modem

So you have three major components.

    1. The Service is Not working well by not providing 6MB/sec. (I.e ISP responsibility).

    2. The Modem is problematic. (I.e. ISP Responsibility).

    3. Your computer is the culprit.

You have to make sure that your computer is Not the culprit and then the ISP has to solve the problem.

    How to make sure?

The simplest way is to use another computer that you that it is working well.

You do not have another computer?

On a hardware level it might be that your Network card or the network cable is malfunction. I.e. you have to try another cable, or and install another Network card.

In General, you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer’s Device Manager. Make sure that the Network Card drivers are installed correctly; i.e. there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two. Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify

Note: In your system the TCP/IP has to be set to Auto and the IP would be the extrenal IP.

If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

If need to Reinstall; Log to this page it have a lot of links to instructions for Windows Network Installation -http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html

    Jack (MVP-Networking).

P.S. If all of the above it too much, you should look for a pro to come and slove the problem.

    Agreeing with the below posts!
I have 10 Mb/sec . For some time I was getting DL speeds at about 200KB/sec Max. I knew this was too slow of course and tried TCP optimizer and in a single click I was getting 700 - 800 KB/s and at the moment I am using an anchiet PC that can't write as fast as it comes in. You may want check the below post, then if every thing checks OK give TCP optimizer a try
