    Hi,

I have two problems with internet: (1) my modem (Motorola SB4200 SURFboard) takes a good 30 min to boot up each time, and this problem started suddenly about 2 months ago. (2) Immediately after modem has booted up, internet access is excruciatingly slow for subsequent one and a half hours! My ISP drew a blank, so I'm looking to you for much-needed help! BTW, I use a pentium 4 processor with Windows XP, and have DSL. Thanks a lot in advance!

You might need a New Modem.

power off your modem for a good 5 mins then reboot it.

Other than that could assigning static IP addresses help?

Whether your IP is dynamic or static will not make your internet slow. Having a DHCP assigned address could cause the internet not to work right away, depending on whether or not you have an IP address.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions yet. It could be your network card, your PC, the ethernet cable, or the wiring at the location, too. The only way to really know is to test it will a different PC that works fine connected to the internet, as well as a different ethernet cable or at a different location.

If your ISP is still drawing a blank after all this, they're probably BSing you and just don't want to spend the time and money to resolve the issue.
