    thanks

You said you are on Cox. Where I live, Cox doesn't need drivers installed on your machine for the ethernet-connected modem. Your authenticatation is handled in the modem itself, and is not tied to your username or password. The Network Connection properties of your NIC should not have any reference to Cox whatsoever. The CD they send you merely contains diagnostics to install on your machine to assist with tech support calls-- or hopefully to help avoid TS calls.

If your NIC is properly installed, and your modem is not defective, the recommended sequence of events when you are not able to surf is to power down both the computer and modem. Then power on the modem and wait for the initial power-up sequence to finish and you have steady (not flashing) lights. Power on the computer and you should be connected. I'm curious-- is there some reason you are unable to get Cox phone tech support to help you troubleshoot this?

yeah i put in a call into their office in my city becuase i called their 24/7 number and the guy said i had to talk to somebody here in conroe. but the whole reason i called is becuase the modem won't keep a connection to the internet for more than about 2 hours, i have already done a thread on this called "cable modem trouble" under networking. you can go back and read what all was said about that. and i have no idea what it could be so i am just trying eveything i can think of (like switching from usb to ethernet). thanks

Yeah, it's kind of hard to keep things straight addressing one issue in two different threads.
    A couple other questions:

Were you having a problem with the USB modem maintaining a connection?
Can you see your ethernet card in Device manager-- is there a yellow "!"
Are you saying you cannot see your NIC in Network Connections?

ok. um yes the when i run the modem to the computer using usb it does not maintain the connection for more than about and hour and a half.

no i cannot see the ethernet card in device manager.

and no i the network conections window is blank.

    thanks

A common cause of connectivity issues with Cox High Speed service is too many splits in the cable. Just like signal strength for your cable TV service is degraded when you split the cable, so is your data signal. Cox recommends that the cable coming into your house be split with a two-way splitter. One side should go directly and only to your cable modem and be split no further, and the other side should service your TVs and be split and/or amplified as necessary.

As to your NIC, first check the status and activity lights on the card's backplate. There should be a solid light, and another that flashes when data is passing throught the NIC. No lights (and no card showing in Device Manager), and the card is either defective or not seated properly in the slot.

Any problems as described in the last paragraph, and you'll never see a Network Connection for that NIC.
