I have a VGA cable with 15 male pins on each end.

I cannot seem to find a replacement with a DVI one.

Do they make a DVI cable to replace mine?

    >>Hi Sheldon - I do not understand the difference between the VGA and DVI cables except that the latter is digital and the former is a combination of analogue and digital.

The VGA cable I have has 15 pins on each end. Every cable I see says DVI to VGA or the other way around. So, I am not looking for a DVI cable but a conversion using a VGA to DVI cable -is that correct?
I also cannot fine 15 male pinned cables on both ends to accommodate my pc.

The reason I am looking to change is that I began getting, "auto adjust is in progress," at each boot and log in.
I noticed that when I unplug and plug the power cable in again, the message disappears for a while. My NVidia card is updated. Perhaps the monitor being 9 years old is the cause. I have no other to test it with. I also wonder if cable can be returned but doubt it.
What can you tell me about this issue?

    Hi Eldon
Not getting a name right is discourteous-sorry, and thanks for your reply.

I don't see any cables that have 5 pins on each end.

If I have male 5 pin on each end I should think the replacement cable would be the same.

Is it likely I need an adapter in the middle to match pins?

Just picture a cable with 5 male pins on each end.

One goes to the pc and the other to the monitor.

    Sorry to frustrate you.
I have that cable but am trying to get a digital one, DVI, with 5 male pins on each end to fit I my monitor and pc.
    Maybe they don't make them.
It's ok if you want to leave this alone.
I think they do not make them or I need an adapter.
I will work on it and thanks for your help.

    Not giving up...
You can't replace a VGA cable with a DVI cable. Also, DVI cables have a lot more than 5 pins.

Does your graphics card have a DVI connector? If it does, you need to know if it's DVI-D (digital), DVI-A (analogue), or DVI-I (integrated - anaolgue & digital).

My graphics card is NVidia GE Force GT 420.
There is another blue 5 pin connector I once put this cable in and it just said it cannot use that set up but it fit + it too is blue.
I have Belarc, would there be anything there that could help?
    I also have Speccy.
I do not know if it has a DVI connector and do not know if it is DV or I.
Is there a way to find this out?

The whole purpose was to see if another cable, preferably DVI, would stop the intermittent "auto adjust in progress" during login.

In the back of the pc the only other possibility would be the other 15 pin blue receptacle or port that looks like the one I am using. I have the Dell XPS 8300 4 1/2 years old and the monitor is Dell E196FP manuf. 2006.

My card has the latest update.

From the cables I have seen I would need a port with more pins than appear in the back of my pc.

    Now we're getting somewhere...
Here's a link to your card with all the specifications. Bookmark it for future reference.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-geforce-gt-420-oem-us.html

The GeForce GT420 has the following connectors:
VGA - 15-pin blue (same as at the back of the PC).
DVI-I - Integrated, combines digital and analog in the same connector.
    HDMI - High-Definition Multimedia Interface.

To confirm, does the monitor have a VGA connector?

I will keep the referral and thank you, Eldon.
I am not home at the moment but I can confirm that the monitor has the same connection as the pc because the cable looks the same on each end 15 pin.

Once I know what to get, do you think getting the right digital cable will fix the issue instead of just VGA?

It's difficult to say. If you get a converter cable, it might make matters worse or not work at all. There are numerous VGA to DVI, VGA to HDMI, DVI to HDMI, etc. cables, connectors and converters, some better than others. At the end of the day, VGA to VGA, DVI to DVI, and HDMI to HDMI will allways be the better option.

The problem you are experiencing could be due to the cable, graphics card or 9-year old monitor. Post as much info regarding the problem as possible. Also, ask around, you might be able to borrow a cable or monitor.

FYI If it's the monitor, I suggest you get a DVI-I or HDMI monitor and cable, finances permitting.

I will ask around and maybe can borrow a monitor or cable but the pickings are slim.
I do appreciate the work you did nd thank you very much.
I wonder if the cable would work with my laptop?

Your laptop should have a VGA connector like the PC and graphics card. Or it might have an HDMI connector. The connectors in the image I posted are from left to right: VGA - HDMI - DVI-I.

    >>Eldon -I wanted to connect my pc to my monitor however I only have a 15 pin receptacle or port on each device or each end.
I think my 4 1/2 year old pc and 9 year old monitor are the problem as you indicated it might be. I am really very sorry to have chewed up your time. I am going to get a new monitor as it will go with a new pc when the time comes. I have your advice and will use it when I buy.
Thank you so much once again

    >>[It is your monitor, not cables or the OS that is the issue. Normally the Inverter or lamp starts dying around that age.

You can get a decent refurbished for around $60 on newegg.com. I just got a HP L1955 for $54 & speakers that attach to it for $19.]<<

I thought you would like to read this. You did say the age could be a factor.
    Thanx again.

peterr, I would not buy a refurbished monitor when for $20 more I could buy a brand new one. Keep in mind, we live in different countries.
Ensure you buy a monitor with a DVI-I connector - your graphics card has one.

As for speakers, I'm playing my PC through a 35-year old Hi-Fi.

    >>Eldon - that is sound advice as the monitor will likely serve the next pc so should have various ports and good integrity. Thanx again
