    Hello!

First of all, I would like excuse myself for some wrong spelling and stuff, but I will try to keep it as clear as possible. English is not my primary language.

So lets skip to the problem. Recently, I decided to start playing CoD2 again. I went online got my own copy and stuff and after I installed it seemed to work fine. After I installed the 1.3 patch, my FPS droped to 1. On menu, ingame that is. I tried all the diffrent kinds of ingame settings (SLI, Sync, maxfps, DX7...), nothing seems to work.

So i started wondering about my ATI drivers. I updated them, the problem presists.

Furthermore, I got another another 1.3 patch installer. The problem seems to presist.

I also got another copy of the game installer. The problem is still here.

I tried to install .NET framework 1.1 and some other installations: Doesnt help it either.

I tested if my graphic card works with ATITool, it all seems to work fine. My directx also works fine...

I am realy runing out of ideas what to do, so help would be REALY appriciated, since CoD2 is the only FPS game I became to like in my whole gaming history :p And also, does anyone have an idea how to f*** mute the installer sound? Its getting REALY annoying after reinstalling the game like 15th time :p

    My computer info:
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA
    Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 3500+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.2GHz (2.5 at the moment, i've overclocked it a little bit)
Memory: 3GB RAM (originaly 1 GB, I added 2 more when i still played the game, so that modification doesnt induce the problem, I believe)
    Hard Drive: 250 GB
    Video Card: Radeon X1600 Series
    Sound Card: Realtek AC97 Audio
    Speakers/Headphones: Logitech X230
    Keyboard: Logitech G15 Keyboard
    Mouse: Razer Krait Mouse
    Operating System: Windows XP SP3

Here is also a short video just to show you how it looks like:

Well I would suggest uninstalling the game, cleaning up and reinstalling it but not adding the patch. I played COD2 religiously and never patched it, never noticed any issues that warrented a patch. Sometimes patches and updates are more hassle than they are worth and sometimes they break the game altogether.

Basically if you reinstall without the patch and the game runs fine, leave it alone and enjoy it, if you are experiencing issues that the patch claims to fix then we can rethink our strategy.

I would do that if i could. The fact is that 99% of servers in our country runs on 1.3 servers, so I can't play without updating the game to 1.3

You say you tried other in game settings, does that mean you have tried with everything set to minimum?
Do you have similar issues with any other games?
And do you have similar problems in the single player mode on COD2?

If not then I'm going to have to say it's a server issue, odd I know but I've seen similar before where the server is having problems and it either locks up your machine or hangs.

Not 100% sure if you have tried a clean reinstall either, uninstall it, delete the folder, clean reg, reboot and install.
With everything you've tried at the moment I can't think of another reason, like I said, if the single player and other games work fine.

Yes, I have tryed it on minimum settings, altho I used to run the game on 1024*768 resolution w/o filtering with DirectX 7 method on constant 150 FPS, if I had unlocked it reached up to 250 seeing the sky.

Nope, I seem to play DotA (Warcraft III map) with no problems at all. I have had a problem playing DotA while using operating system Windows 7 with Skype (a chatting program) turned on, but I guess its another story.

Nope, Single player seems to work fine, even with DirectX 9 rendering.

It doesnt seem to be the server's fault, since I can run CoD2 MP even without connecting to the server, but the game appears to lag even on the main screen.

Yeah, I will try to clean up all the registry keys, folders and other settings the old installation might have left on my computer. Just now, I began suspecting a bad DirectX install, since it came along with the game. I would be using DX7 rendering, but DX9 installed... Only thing I can think of right now.

Another note: I have checked the graphic card aswell, and it appears to work fine (in fact i was able to cloak it pretty well, so i guess i was lucky with the puchase :p Tho im just gona run it on normal mode for now, until i find out whats the problem.).

Furthermore, I am suspecting it must be something with the game's graphic card usage, since constant 1 fps does seem awkward. Considering it should drop a few FPS up and down, but the constant 1, a periodic picture refresh does give me questions. I mean I would understand if lag was random or unperiodic, but I dont know... maybe its an important info.

Anyways, if anyone finds anything useful, I will be realy greatful to hear it. I have been playing 3 games my entire life (CoD2, WoW and DotA), than I stoped CoD2 because of wow, and now i stoped wow... so I kinda miss CoD2 :S

Ill keep you up to date, in case i find anything new. Im off to bed now.

Not sure if I'm reading that correctly, you can run COD 2 Multi player fine until you connect to a server?
The video you showed is after you've connected to the server, if it only lags once you try to choose a match and at no other time and no other games lag at all then it's sending flags up all over the place that it's a server issue.
Also if it is what I suggest it can cause the dragging mouse you are experiencing, like I said it's odd but not unheard of and I have seen it myself.
I think it was combat arms I last saw it happen on, one day just opened it up, went to look for a server and match and everything was lagging badly, was like that for 2 days, then back to normal.

Given the only time you experience this problem period is when connecting to the servers... I don't see what else it would be. It's a process of elimitnation, if all other games are working and the SP is working then there's no issues with your PC or COD2, the issues are with the connecting to COD servers, this could be caused by server faults or the patch having some issues but since you've tried several different patches thats almost eliminated that too.... only leaves 1 thing... servers.

One other thing, how are other games when you connect to online?

I would contact the online help if there is any anymore, you also have to remember you are playing a game that is 7 years old, we are on COD 7 now.
You might want to check out COD 3 (if you like the WW2) or COD World At War, or you could come into Modern Warfare with COD4.
If you like COD 2 that much then COD 3, w@w, and COD4 will probably be to your likeing.
COD 3 is almost the same game as COD 2 with better graphics etc and the servers are still fairly fullish, or they were last time I played it, albeit on PS3.

Nope, you are misunderstanding me. No matter what i do, the game is laggy, it runs on 1 FPS. If i am connected to the server, if i am not connected, no matter the settings. Its always 1 FPS (its not the mouse thats lagging, its the low framerate). That video i posted might be a little bit misleading, i admit.

Nope, I can play Warcraft III (DotA map) just fine, World of Warcraft also seems to be fine.

About the other games... yes I have seen, I have tried, I dont like :D Any. None of these games impressed me much + I like the fact the game is rather old and thats why runs pretty well on my computer. I also like the fact that kids that are not that good at gaming just follow trends and go to play newer games, while I and other players that value the game remain loyal to it :p No other FPS game impressed me even a little (Except maybe unreal tournament 2003 or 2005, not sure, but only on single player jsut for fun... nothing serious).

Its not the graphic card, its not the server eitehr (since i could connect to any server or none at all, and the 1 FPS problem would be there), not either my network problem... so the problem must be in the game itsself. It appears after I apply 1.3 patch.

    Hey!

I found out what the problem was :D Apparently, my antivirus program (Sophos Antivirus) blocked punkbuster and one of my graphic card drivers for suspecious behaviour :D I just authorized both and the game appears to run smoothly :D

Amazing, I feel like stupid not to think about this b4 :D

All in all, Im glad it works now :D Thanks for your time dude.

Glad you got it sorted out, I must admit in the huge number of games I've played on PC over the years, I've never seen the problem you had caused by an anti virus.
Oh well, I've learnt something else lol

Just touching on your comment of kids following trends, I get your point there, much of the reason I don't play online much anymore.
Although having said that, last time I played COD 3 it was a nice experience due to the lack of idiots, having said that, COD 2 was a much better game with only graphics as the exception.

    Enjoy :)
