    Hello Major Geeks Forum Members,

I am a student at Arizona State University and am doing research on individuals who frankly seem to have a real passion for their computers. I have met many wonderful PC and Mac owners around Phoenix over the past year and quite a few suggested that I post my survey here on the Major Geeks forum so that I can learn from you.

So, if you are “into computers,” please do me the favor of completing my online survey. This should take no more than fifteen minutes of your time. My questions ask your opinions about your favorite computer – there are no right or wrong answers. Essentially, we are interested in learning about the many roles computers play in people's lives. Of course all answers are anonymous and your responses will only be used in combination with those of other computer enthusiasts.

Those who have completed my questionnaire have found it asks some fun and interesting questions.

To access my online survey, just click on the following link, or copy and paste it into your browser:

Your help with my research project is really appreciated. Thank you! :)

    Sincerely,

    Jill Evans
    Arizona State University Student

P.S. I hope it is OK that I posted my survey here - if it is not, please let me know and I will take it down immediately.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks ASU_student. :)

It's been a while since MG'ers have been asked to participate in a survey. Will you share the results with us when it's done?

As long as you share the results, absolutely! :major

As you have noticed, we love our computers. We're just curious about what you find out about them. :)

Now, give me a moment, and I'll go take that survey of yours...

Okay, I took the survey. I rule! :)

So, Jill Evans, how badly do you want to get people to take your survey? More importantly, when is the deadline? I have a blog on a gaming community site, with lots of people tracking me, where I can get you some extra visibility if you want. Interested?

I don't know about this study, it's too much like a standard professional survey that I occasionally get when visiting some hardware sites. The questions are very insightful showing a good knowledge of computers obviously put together by geeks along with psychological type 'degree of addiction' questions, I liked the last survey better. I'm not sure if I'll complete this one or not, sorry for my cynicism Jill.:)

seemed like a cross between psyco-babble and marketing ploy to me but I filled it out anyway because it did not ask for any personal information.

Well, I decided to complete it.

@Wraith Ya on the psycho babble. ;) Are you a geek or just a nerd looking for love in all the wrong places.:-D

yeah dog, I thought some of those questions were just plain creepy! Was wondering if they were going to ask if I thought I was truly loved by my mommy or not! :D

I was looking for the one question of you and your computer relationships.:confused

You must be a psychology student studying the relationship between computers and owners? What course are you doing?

What is the purpose of the study? How will my answers help?

But your survey questions only seem to be based on consumerism.:confused

    Hello Everyone,

WOW! I'm honored that so many of you took the time to respond to my survey and also post a reply to my thread. Lots of great questions....here goes on answers:

    1. Yes, I'd love to share our results. We plan to collect data on this effort (both online and through personal interviews) over the next year or so. I will share our findings as soon as I can, but I must warn you, academic research takes a while. Ideally, I will be able to post something here in about a year or a year and a half. Don't hate me, please! (hate my faculty advisor! just kiddding...)

    2. I can appreciate everyone trying to guess the purpose of the study. It's early in our project, but right now, we are aiming to learn the role that different types of possessions such as computers play in people's lives (close relationships and otherwise). It's helpful to hear from all different types of computer owners (experts, novices, etc) - to learn as much as possible about computers as possessions.

Thanks again for your time and energy - as well as your honesty. What a wonderful group!

    Best regards,
    Jill

Done, but there was 2 questions that were the same or very similar - 'Would you ever sell your computer' came up twice I think.

KNow that one very well, think iirc our last project in work that started in 2005 has only just published early findings, one I was co- on took a year to get past peer review and pubished on ScienceDirect, he cogs of acadamia turn slowly.

Common to have similar or reworded questions later in surveys to act as control questions, Microsoft are very adept at adding many to their tech surveys.

Sure, let me know. Unlike most others here, I thought your study questions seemed very similar to the Communications studies I read back when I was taking those classes, on how computers impact not just our daily life but how we relate and communicate with each other, and so on.

If your faculty advisor wants more info, let me know. I don't think you can send me PMs until you have 50 posts, but I can send them to you if you post here and tell me what you need.

    nice survey!

i know that we're not supposed to mention other forums (or something like that), but there are some other large computer forums that you could go to to post your survey (to get the maximum amount of survey takers), some examples would be forums.extremeoverclocking.com, ocforums.com, or computerforum.com, all of which are smaller than MG's, but still have a dedicated user base.

i just finished the survey, the questions about the computer turning me on and the one about being exited while near the computer gave me a good laugh.

It's ok to love your computer. It's not ok to LOVE your computer . . . and in fact is probably illegal in most places . . . :-D

Interesting survey . . . I had to really think about some of the questions regarding maintenance and upgrades. I do both often but never really thought about the time it takes overall.

  24. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

Actually, no, it's fine... there's nothing illegal about getting, ahem, "friendly" with electronic devices. In fact, there's quite a successful industry built up around that very idea. ;)
