#1) Do you like using Zone Alarm?

#2) Have you heard of other FIREWALLS that maybe you've thought about using instead?

#3) I have a problem (I think I brought this on myself) and I've searched the help in Zone Alarm and went to their website and sent them an e-mail (waiting for a reply). For the TRUSTED ZONES for FIREWALL I think one was setup automatically when I put everything together...Broadcom Integrated Controller....as an "Adapter Subnet" for the "Internet Zone".

Now the other day I was looking at the log for all the blocked entries and saw over and over again numbers similar to 67.217.74.94 and accidentally I "added" this and it was "added" to my "trusted zone" and when I looked it is now an "Adapter Subnet" for the "Internet Zone" and it's called "WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface.

I think I know enough to know that my computer is set up (?) to use Broadcom and the WAN... whatever...but I don't want it using that IP address but it is what was trying to access my computer and I don't want it to be TRUSTED.

When I check the log still...that IP is being BLOCKED (so that's good). When I view the page for the trusted zone, I can't add, edit, or remove that wrong "adapter subnet" -- it says you can not remove an ACTIVE adapter subnet. It isn't always listed there, so is there a time it's not active and I can find it and remove it?

Help -- or dumb mistake that doesn't matter -- or...

    ZoneAlarm

    Hi Pegg

I am no expert but when I had a similar issue that I could'nt figure out with ZoneAlarm, I just un-installed the program and re-installed. This may seem drastic if others have a solution but it worked for me. I know there are a couple of files that you can delete that will allow you to reconfigure ZoneAlarm as if it were just being installed but off hand, I don't know which they are. If no else has a solution to your problem then I would re-intall.

    ZoneAlarm

    Hi Pegg

I forgot to add that if your going to re-install ZoneAlarm then a word of caution. Make sure that you go to the "Preferences" tab in ZoneAlarm and uncheck "Load ZoneAlarm at Startup" and reboot your computer to make sure ZoneAlarm is not running befor you un-install Zone. People who don't do this end up with major problems and have had to re-install Windows.

Well, as obvious as that is to reinstall it -- I hadn't actually thought of that, and thanks for the warning.

I found out some information on svchost.exe asking for sever permission (zone alarm pro) message from tuesday apparently it asks for server permission as 2 of the main things it likes to organize are your DHCP and DNS settings if you deny it access it blocks your connection to your ISP.s DNS
The way around it is to give both your DNS and DHCP servers trusted access.in ZA
    apparantly this works ... http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/images/icons/icon1.gif

Well... that all depends how your network connection is managed. If its always on LAN connection... then you can set the IP manually.. and youre sorted. Dialup/modem is a bit different.

I have a dialup connection and am only using the free Zone Alarm (not Pro).

I went ahead an uninstalled and reinstalled Zone Alarm after carefully looking over my settings and their help section. I think I have everything configured correctly now and so far everything is running okay.

    Thanks for the help.
