Hi, I recently bought a bargain Dell for about $100. It has Windows XP, which is why I wanted it. But when I try to install my Canon Powershot A590 camera, I have trouble. I installed the disc that goes with it. But when I try to connect the camera, I get:
    "Files Needed

Some files on Windows XP Pro CD-Rom are needed.

Insert Windows XP Pro CD-Rom into the drive selected below and then click OK.

    Copy files from D:\i386."

What does this mean and what do I do? I did something similar a long time ago, but I can't understand my notes or figure it out. HELP! :cry

Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and see if you have an i386 folder on C.
    Like this http://file.walagata.com/w/perk/MjG/folder_i386.jpg

Point the installer for your camera to C:\i386 rather than D and it should find what it needs.

Thanks, Goldenskull, but it shows this at the website you referred me to:
"There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver." My XP version is 32bit, if that helps.

And thank you, Plodr, but I'm a neophite and don't understand what you mean. :-o I think I've managed the first part of your suggestion, as I went to 1. My Computer, 2. Local Disk (C:) 3. I386 (Did I do that right?)
But how do I "point the installer for your camera to C:\i386 rather than D"?

    So you have a i386 folder on C: ?

Do you also have a D: drive with a i386 folder on it? If not, does that message during the camera software install have a Browse button?

If that does not help, can you post a screenshot of that message?

Go to the cameras webpage on Canon's site http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/suppo...ot_a_series/powershot_a580#DriversAndSoftware
Tell it you have Windows> XP.
Download the latest version of ZoomBrowser. When you run the installer you've just downloaded it will ask you to put the original install disk into the drive to verify that you have a Canon camera (I know, kind of backwards eh). Do so, and you should be on your way. ZoomBrowser will be the software for connecting to the camera.

Alternatively you can get a card reader and just pull the memory card from the camera and use the card reader to transfer the images to the computer using Windows regular browser (Windows Explorer).

I just want to apologize to everyone for not getting back to you. My son has been having seizures and had had serious problems since Saturday, so I've had no time to go on-line. I appreciate your answers and I will try them when things settle down around here. Thank you again, and please accept my apologies.

Don't apologize, seizures take priority over much of anything in life. The camera will wait, and so will we. Take care of your son.
