i have a canon 5.1 MGPX and a kingston memory card. i turned on the camera and I should have 200 photos on it and it says I have 0 taken. The photos have been wiped and i didnt format the camera.

what free software can i try to recover it. I took 2 photos after this happened and they have appeared as normal and i have only 2 photos recorded.

Hi jagguy, to my knowledge, I believe they are gone, unless they are on the "internal" memory... Someone else may be able to answer you in more detail, but I have a Kodak, and I also use a memory card, but a few times I was changing settings, and changed the 'storage' from the card to the internal... You might want to check that, maybe take the memory card out completely, and then check to see if they show up... I am not very well versed on your particular camera, however, I do believe they all work about the same. You have an internal memory and a memory card... I hope you have the on the internal memory, for sure..

Ahh, probably should not have taken more pictures as those will likely have overwritten the traces of the old "erased" photos on your memory card.

There are a bunch of data recovery programs. One of the PC Inspector utilities might work.

i have trued the card on other cameras and computers and nothing.
i was told to try ontrack data recovery software but it is a trial that does 1 image

I mentioned the PC Inspector program (free) which will attempt to analyze your memory card and see if there are any recoverable files on it.

Other cameras won't see anything on the "erased" card. Other machines will not see it either unless they use recoverable software.

When a memory card is erased it normally only erases the "directory"; the data can remain intact and "hidden". This is why it can be a security problem if one does a simple format.

I download pc inspector and recovered some images about 30 jpg out of 200 which no program can open.

what settings do i use to look for files and how do i open these jpg's as this is not working. does this mean they are damaged?

You might try a different recovery program. Here's some free apps that are primarily for picture recovery and/or have good ratings here at MG:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/PC_INSPECTOR_smart_recovery_d5040.html (you may have tried this already)
:confused It seems to me there were more apps aimed at photo recovery a couple of months ago... hmmm... maybe I just didn't look very hard. Take a look at the Data Recovery section here at MG, and maybe the Drive Utilities section for other options. Good luck!
