    Hi there,
I have a dell dimension 2400 with xp home installed. There is a cd burner that came with it and I have put in a lg cd/dvd burner. The question is: When I right click on the drives, E or D and select enable in the recording tab it will unenable the other drive. Shouldn't both be able to record? Or do I have to manually alter the settings whenever I want to use a different burner.
    Thanks, old dog.

I don't run XP so what I post may not apply. I put a blank CD or DVD in either one of my two internal optical drives, fire up my burning software and in the box with an arrow, I select which drive I want to use to burn. I don't "enable" nor "disable" anything.

You can burn with both simultaneously, but you may not be able to burn as fast when using 2 at once. Nero supports burning on up to 4 drives at once, maybe more. Exactly how do you do it? I don't remember  I haven't had to burn more than one disc at a time in over a year... you can probably get more info from the folks at Nero (if that's what you're using).

Thanks for the reply dlb & plodr,
I am using sonic, which came preinstalled, but it looks like it is a windows thing that is setting the recording/copying capability for each of the drives. I will have a look at sonic and see what I can find. It is not a mojor problem but if it is possible to select either drive without going to "my computer" and changing things I would like to be able to do it.
Ialso have the option of selecting which drive to use, but if it is the wrong" one" I have to go to my computer and enable it. That doesn't seem right to me.

i have two burners installed, an older cd r/rw and a dvd r/rw, and i don't have a problem writing to either of them. have u tried to write to either of them from within sonic or are u just asking if you have to change that setting each time. as far as i know u don't have to.

You shouldn't have two different burning programs on a PC together. That usually leads to problems. Since you have Sonic you should disable the Windows effort and avoid loading Nero as well.

I reinstalled sonic and can now write to either of the drives. When i right click on the cd drives , only one can be enabled to write but it doesn't effect sonic. You are right, I don't have to change the setting each time. It is only something that happens from word ie I have to send it through sonic, which is dead easy.
    Thanks for your replies!

Studiot, I posted before seeing your post. That appears to be EXACTLY what the problem is. I will disable the windows program and let you know if that fixes it.
I think you have nailed it.
    Many thanks old dog
