Can a DOS program use an external modem under Windows XP?

I have a DOS medical billing program that needs to dial out via an external modem for billing purposes. Does XP allow a DOS software to use a standard modem?

    Thanks all

If the modem is a External Serial modem, there should be no problem. It is just when running a Dos type program inside of WinXP, it becomes muddy, since you are not really running the program in Dos.

Yes... It is a DOS program that is currently working fine running on an older Windows 98 machine. The database is on a Novell 3.12 server... everything is working fine.

But, the machines are VERY old and we would like to put the program (Proberty) on a new piece of hardware. The program seems to run just fine on Windows XP Pro. I just noticed that it has to dial out every now and then. I don't have a modem on any of my PC's... and I read somewhere that XP will stop DOS from accessing the modem directly.

    OK, I'll give it a look-see....

You could build a new machine for Win98 to run on, and move everything over if worst comes to worst. As for XP stopping the modem from dialing out, only if an internal. I would set up a test machine first before committing to a full time use, and make sure that everything works with the new modem and machine with XP.

    Stay with the external modem.

You make an excellent point; get some new Windows 98 machines and use XP as the server... no problem there. I will give the whole setup a good test before going "hot". You know, you can't really get any "name brand" PC's that have drivers for 98 any more. I had a client that has to have at least one DOS/Win98 PC's to run the database utilities for a particular app... the app runs fine under XP or 2000, but the utilities do not. Dell, HP, Gateway and a few others said that there new computer are not supported with Win98, and they do not have drivers... I had to get some clones built locally (I'd build them, but I don't have the time) with 98. Go figure!

Check with TigerDirect. If the program runs okay with 98, it should run okay with 2k. As for the drivers. stay with a name brand machine, such as IBM refurbs or even maybe a Via machine.

As for using XP for the server, that I would not do, but maybe use it as a test bed alongside with the 98 machine to see how the behavior is before committing to the XP machine.
