Can A Dvd Be Watched On A Dvd "recorder"?

I was given a Panasonic DMR-EZ485V Recorder from a friend that had to go to a nursing home (along with a lot of good, VHS Movies). I thought I was getting a DVD/VCR Player until I got it home and took a good look at it. I realize these recorders cannot "legally" convert old VHS to DVD, so I don't want to do that. I did look at a vid tutorial and was reminded of the copy-right issue.

But, I am wondering if I can still use it "just" to play a DVD using HDMI to my TV, or a VHS. I'm asking if it can be used the same as a DVD/VCR Player?

If so, I don't know if I need other cords. I have the HDMI I use from my laptop to stream movies. And no longer have a VCR.

Any help would be appreciated, I have a couple of photos, and will also show my TV connections in case for any reason it won't work with my TV. Both have HDMI hookups.

My TV is a Sanyo DP32242

PS I do have the manual for the Recorder if anyone wants to look at it. I couldn't find any info on "just" using it as a "player" Thank you again, for any help.https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1153517/Panasonic-Dmr-Ez485v.html

Ok Tim, I read that, Page 17 but do I need anything other than the Hdmi cord?

Also, on the video tutorial I looked up on youtube, it showed if you try to convert VHS to DVD, it sends up a message saying you can't use "copy righted" VHS. I guess some super old ones don't have that, but some of mine are, well, the last 20 years or so, I don't think there is a super new one at all.

Here's your cake in case you haven't got to lick one today;)

I guess you are talking about bought VHS videos, not home made. I didn't read it all, but I do believe you only need the one cable.

Ok, thanks again Tim, I'll just plug and play, see what happens;) Just never used a gadget like this before. All the VHS tapes I have were store bought, and some came from garage sales. My friend that gave me the DVD Recorder had a collection, seriously, like 400. I went through and picked out a few as I am not that into TV or movies. Just some you can't get on streaming channels like Hulu/Netflix, so I snagged some of my faves;)
