Hi, can anyone please help me with this question i want to buy an AGP 8x card for my (MSI MS 6712) motherboard which is DDR1 with onboard 256mb ATI 9200 graphics, basically can i fit any 8x AGP card (ddr2 or ddr3). ALso if i can, can someone advise whether it is worth fitting a fast AGP card, if the rest of the system is'nt! One more thing sorry to be a pain! can anyone tell me the best type's of 512mb 8x agp card i could use with this motherboard. Any help anyone can give would be extremely appreciated.
    Many Thanks Activedial.

Research the nVidia 7000 series (I believe you can still find an AGP version.

I've used MSI boards for about 3 years now, they have taken everything I've thrown at 'em.

I'm not a "Techie" but I do believe it should not matter how fast your system is, for a good video card.

    Hope this helps.

You can use any agp card in this mobo except agp pro (which is what they use for CAD software programs and they're expensive so don't worry about it). Because you have a socket A motherboard you need to max out the CPU now if you want the board to be worth anything. Its already nearly impossible to find new Athlon XP processors, everything is used. The MSI site says your board can use 400mhz memory but only certain ones so see about getting at least 1gig of memory at 400mhz and the highest processor you can get and then maybe the video card will be worth the effort. Otherwise you might as well spend your money on a new system.

Since you chose not to tell what processor you have or what memory your using I had to assume the worst. If you have an Athlon XP 3000+ and 1gig of 333mhz memory, go ahead and buy your fast card.

The socket A platform is basically obsolete, but the higher end Athlon XP chips are still OK to run some of the older games up until maybe 2005 or 2006. Personally, even if I had a high end socket A chip, I'd save my money for a little while and just upgrade the whole system, or just start from scratch: build a whole new PC, and give the old one to the kids or a neighbor or maybe donate it to a worthy cause. You can build a pretty fast PC for around $500 these days that will completely blow away anything you could possibly do to the socket A computer.

I just took apart my Son's old computer (I built him a new one) and pulled a
GeForce 7600 GS DDR2 512mb AGP out of it, it had a 'socket A' MSI Mobo,

I'll sell it for $100.00 total.

I can send pics if I need to.
